From Isolation to Inclusion. How We Helped Build a Veteran-Friendly Community in Business Building a thriving business isn’t just about numbers, it’s about people. When it comes to veterans, their unique skills can transform a company, hiring veterans alone isn’t enough. Let me tell you the story of how we helped one company go from isolating its veterans to creating a community where they felt empowered to lead. We partnered with a mid-sized manufacturing firm that had a growing number of veteran hires. On paper, they were “military-friendly,” but veterans reported feeling disconnected from their peers and the company culture. The result? High turnover and frustration. Our first step was creating veteran liaison roles. Leaders who served as a voice for veteran employees. These liaisons bridged the gap between veterans and leadership. Additionally, we launched veteran peer networks, which allowed veterans to meet regularly, share experiences, and build camaraderie. We introduced a tailored onboarding program that included a career trajectory map. We also implemented continuous development initiatives, ensuring veterans had opportunities to grow and take on leadership positions within the company. We worked with leadership to ensure that veterans’ experiences were not just recognized but celebrated. This included educating the entire workforce on the strengths veterans bring, fostering a culture of inclusion, and incorporating veterans into leadership conversations. The results spoke for themselves. We saw a significant increase in veteran retention, job satisfaction, and productivity. Veterans who once felt isolated were now taking leadership roles, mentoring others, and driving company success. Sarah, a veteran who felt frustrated, isolated, and considered leaving, now leads the company’s veteran outreach initiatives. Her transformation exemplifies how inclusion can empower veterans to lead and make lasting impacts. A veteran-friendly workplace is more than just hiring. It’s about creating a culture where veterans feel supported, valued, and empowered. At FRAGO22, we specialize in transforming businesses into veteran-ready organizations that thrive. Is your company ready to make the shift from isolation to inclusion? Flicking the bird at the status quo | Award Winning Rebel🏴☠️| Women’s Safety, PPE & Retention Specialist | Speaker | Mining Geologist | Bold as Brass Tribe Founder
Yesterday I spoke to Megan Dodd and the evolving women’s network team at Portakabin about creating a prosperous women’s network for change. Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are a brilliant way of getting the employees’ sense of your company’s culture across the middle management layer, and as long as they have senior level sponsorship, resources, and aren’t expected to take on the role of an I&D team, they can have a huge impact on locating the sticking points in your business. ERG champions can be the voice and educators that spread the word of change, and ERG chairs the relayer of information from members to senior levels. The groups should be for those who identify, as well as allies and advocates. ERGs can also take the name of ‘network’ or ‘community’. A ‘network’ is a cobweb of people who interact to support one another when it’s needed, like in the Bold as Brass sense of reaching out for help and meeting people who can mentor and teach skills. A ‘community’ is a group of people linked by common experiences who feel a sense of place in the presence of one another. They may share a common goal or vision and members may be diverse in characteristics. I love being part of a community, like my village community - you can’t go out for a walk without bumping into someone who knows you just enough to remember how you were the last time you saw each other (so important when I was on maternity leave during covid time). And our gym community; the sweatiest, honkyest, smiliest group of unlike-minded people who push each other on to achieve, whether they’ve known each other for 20 years or 20 minutes. Being around people united by a common purpose is what gives me a sense of belonging - ERGs, network groups, or communities can help your workforce in this way too. #boldasbrass #network #community #tribe

On Friday I hit a huge milestone - 20 years with Gattaca (/Matchtech)! I could never have imagined when I walked through the door aged 24 that I would still be going strong with the same company well into my 40s! Naturally this has made me reflect a bit on what's kept me here for such a long time, and in reality there are so many reasons. But to name a few: 👉 Culture: Without question what always has, and always will, make this company unique and special. Of course, culture has evolved over the years but at the heart of it has always been the simple but important values of integrity, camaraderie, fun, professionalism and trust have run through the core. Today this culture is as good as I can ever remember, with progressive and inspiring leadership, and a real unity. 👉 People: I have been so lucky to work for and with some really amazing people, and naming them all would be almost impossible. But in as best chronological order as I can remember, a huge thank you to Les Berridge, Dip RP, (Hon) FIRP, Darryl Crossley, Stuart Feest, Keith Lewis, Adrian Gunn, Ben Leeds, James Smith, Paul King, Matthew Wragg, David Heath FCIPD, Tim Carling all of whom have had the direct responsibility of managing me over this time, and to whom I owe so much for who I have become and what I know. Someone I was never lucky enough to report to but want to also call out is the late and much-missed Grahame Carter, who embodied everything that is great about the leadership and culture of Gattaca with his every word and action. 👉 Challenge & variety: From my original role recruiting contractors into technology, to managing teams of recruiters, to latterly being responsible for acquiring new workforce solutions customers - there has never been a dull moment. Has it been tough? Of course it has at times, but with so many highs, and great people to share success and navigate the more challenging times with when they occur. 👉Reward & acknolwedgement: Since day 1 I have always loved how this industry and our company particularly celebrate success. My career path has been entirely within my control, and I know always will be. I've always felt appreciated and valued, whether I've been smashing it at the time, or not. 3 company award trophies from over the years proudly on display on my desk too! 👉Future: There has always been prospect and excitement at what lies ahead, and today this is as much the case as it's ever been. We've got the right strategy, the right leader, the right culture, the right aspirations, and an ever-strengthening army of the right people. I may not see in my 40 years as my retirement plans may have failed if so 🤣 but I am hopefully nowhere near the end of my journey yet! Thanks for a very happy 20 years to date Gattaca! #gattaca #careers #matchtech

Absolutely delighted to be part of this. Embracing Diversity and Inclusion is not an optional choice or a ‘nice thing to do’ - it is essential in today’s world. Extensive research shows that diverse businesses perform better, have better employee retention, and helps to bridge what can be sizeable gaps between those from different backgrounds, cultures, age groups and many other aspects of life. Everybody deserves a seat at the table and to have the same opportunities to progress without having to change who they are to ‘fit in’. It’s great to work for an organisation that shares these values! #diversityandinclusion #bringyourdifference
Huge shoutout to our CEO Andrew Russell, Bravura Solutions' UK D&I pillar leads, partners and guests for attending our inaugural Diversity & Inclusiveness Roundtable to explore how we can maintain the momentum in this space to ensure – as Liz Mayers so wonderfully articulated it – more “culture add” and less “culture fit” to fuel our organisational ambitions. With steadfast support from the very top and the courage, resourcefulness, innovation and capability of our D&I community there is nothing that can stop us from continuing to forge forward and make positive change happen. Much gratitude Jonathan Hawkins, Emma Carscadden, Steve Fanus, David Gillespie, Peter McKenzie, Lynn Lovell, Louise Barnes, Andrew Russell, Jennifer Reischel-Berg, Liz Mayers, Jenny W., Alison Unsted, Miriam Kimber, Catherine Gurner, Debs Barlow and Lorraine Mwita
