Years after the onset of the pandemic, most hotels continue to grapple with job vacancies in USA and Canada! Industries across the economy are grappling with a shortage of workers, exacerbated by the fact that there are nearly three million more job openings than unemployed individuals, according to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) December 2023 report. The hotel industry, in particular, has been significantly impacted by this shortage since the pandemic, as many workers laid off during the lockdown have not returned. Despite efforts to recover, Robert Rauch, chairman and chief strategist for Hotel Guru, notes that around 80 percent of the workforce has returned, but skilled and experienced staff remain scarce due to workers transitioning to other industries. While the situation is gradually improving, Kevin Carey, interim president and CEO of the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA), anticipates staffing challenges to persist in 2024, with hotels projected to add approximately 45,000 employees, still significantly below pre-pandemic levels. A survey conducted by AHLA in January 2024 revealed that 67 percent of hoteliers are facing staffing shortages, with critical need in housekeeping. To attract and retain workers, many hotels have raised wages, offered flexible work hours, and improved benefits. Rauch highlights a 20 percent increase in labor costs compared to two years ago due to the low labor supply and multiple job openings. Moreover, hotels are getting creative with perks such as same-day pay, free in-shift meals, and transportation stipends to entice potential employees. Jeanelle Johnson, a principal at PwC, underscores the importance of investing in training programs and leveraging technology to streamline processes and reduce staff burden. Danielle Hawkins from Deloitte emphasizes the significance of offering holistic employee value propositions that encompass career development opportunities, nontraditional benefits, and a culture of inclusion to foster employee retention. The hotel industry, like many others, is grappling with a labor shortage exacerbated by the pandemic, with skilled workers remaining scarce despite some return to the workforce. Efforts to attract and retain employees include raising wages, offering perks, investing in training and technology, but challenges persist, prompting calls for legislative action to address staffing shortages. Despite these efforts, recruiting and retaining employees remain challenging, prompting calls for legislative action to expand guest worker programs and facilitate asylum seekers' access to employment, thereby alleviating staffing shortages in the hotel industry.

Across Australia, including Regional Australia, with over 350,000 hospitality workers leaving the Industry throughout the COVID-19 pandemic crisis period, these workers haven't returned to the Industry because of the lack of enough availability of affordable rental accommodation near their hospitality jobs. Today, the rental accommodation vacancy factors across Australia are at the lowest in Australia's history. Many Regional areas of Australia, its Cities and Townships have vacancy factors of less than 0.1% across the Eastern Seaboard of Australia. These Hospitality workers need help finding affordable rental accommodation near their jobs, and most face soul-destroying 2 to 3 hours per day commuting away from family and friends with basically no downtime, too exhausted from work stress and lack of other supporting hospitality staff work overload. Go for a tour of Australia's Capital Cities. Thousands of once-loved cafes closed down, primarily because of the lack of enough footfall supporting thousands of small businesses across the cities of Australia. The City workers face the same challenges as hospitality workers: lack of enough availability of affordable rental accommodation near their jobs; Australia's CBDs over the last few decades have become enclaves for wealthy residents only; no wonder small businesses in Capital Cities like Sydney and Melbourne are struggling with 50% to 60% drop off of footfall and further looming crisis is the larger capital cities are becoming "Tuesday to Thursday" CBDs accelerating the demise of Cafes, Restaurants that support the tourism industry, try finding place for dinner in Sydney's CBD after 8 pm it's becoming a ghost town. Just Sydney has a shortage of over 3,000 baristas; that's a looming crisis for coffee lovers, a core business of all cafes. #australia #hospitalityworkers #essentialworkers #CBDworkers #crisis

The Hospitality Industry Can No Longer Ignore the Mass Exodus of Talent that is down to the 48 hour week. Someone needs to start the change As the hospitality industry grapples with the challenges brought on by the global pandemic, it is imperative that we address the alarming rate at which talented individuals are leaving the sector. The mass exodus of skilled workers from hospitality is a pressing issue that cannot be ignored any longer. For too long, the industry has operated with high turnover rates, but the current situation demands our immediate attention. The prolonged impact of the pandemic, coupled with evolving work expectations and the growing demand for better work-life balance, has led to a significant number of professionals leaving the hospitality sector. Whether it's front-line staff, chefs, managers, or other essential workers, the industry is witnessing a drain of valuable talent. Ignoring this trend is no longer an option. The hospitality industry must acknowledge the underlying reasons for this mass departure and take proactive measures to address them. From burnout and mental health concerns to inadequate compensation and limited career growth opportunities, the factors contributing to this exodus are multifaceted and require a comprehensive response. It is time for industry leaders, employers, and stakeholders to come together and foster an environment that prioritizes the well-being, growth, and retention of hospitality professionals. This means reevaluating compensation and benefits packages, implementing sustainable work practices, providing opportunities for career advancement, and placing a renewed focus on employee well-being. By recognizing and addressing the challenges that have led to the exodus of talent, the hospitality industry can begin to rebuild and thrive once again.
