📣 So just confirming that Minister Meaghan Scanlon MP has stated, at the Q Shelter CEOs and Leaders’ lunch today, that the Queensland Government plans to extend the funding uplift for homelessness services (originally a 20% increase for 18 months) until June 2028. The Opposition also announced the same in their Budget in Reply speech last week. It's great to see bipartisan support for this crucial funding, especially as we continue to focus on increasing housing supply which will take some time to flow through. It’s worth highlighting that NSW announced a similar move in their state budget this week, following in the footsteps of WA and Qld. This is particularly notable considering that the Commonwealth has maintained the status quo in terms of funding to the states and territories in the recent five year agreement. Wise advice from Ontario’s Big City Mayors that many of us hope is heeded. With national level challenges faced in our communities, local governments must have the public resources required. Housing benefit has been unfrozen. For many people, especially those on low incomes or facing financial hardship, the unfreezing of housing benefits can bring a sense of relief and greater stability. This can also represent a positive step toward addressing housing affordability challenges and promoting greater social and economic inclusion for those who require assistance with housing costs. 👏

The National Audit Office has released a report revealing that homelessness programmes are failing to deliver value for money. It shared that homelessness in the UK has worsened since 2018 when the Homelessness Reduction Act came into force. The report calls for a cohesive strategy and to understand the circumstances which have led to such an increase in statutory homelessness, which includes economic challenges and high accommodation costs. This is a welcome step to recognising adequate housing as a fundamental human right and creating a more equitable housing system for all Australians.
