🚶♀️🚶♂️ On this Walk to Work Day, let's take a moment to reflect on the journey many face without stable housing and reliable transportation. For individuals experiencing homelessness, every step isn't just a walk; it's a quest for survival, a search for stability, and a path toward hope. As we lace up our shoes and hit the streets, let's remember those who walk miles each day in search of shelter, support, and a brighter tomorrow. Let's raise awareness about the transportation barriers that often exacerbate the challenges faced by the homeless community, from accessing essential services to securing employment opportunities. Today, let's walk not just for ourselves but also for those whose journeys are marked by uncertainty and adversity. Together, let's advocate for inclusive transportation policies, affordable housing solutions, and compassionate support systems that uplift and empower every individual to walk their path with dignity and purpose. #WalktoWorkDay #HomelessnessAwareness #TransportationJustice #BuildingBelonging 🌟👟

Did you know that over the past five years, we have supported over 80 adults (and their children) who have experienced Modern Slavery and are rebuilding their lives in Derbyshire. Recovering from the impact of exploitation can be a lengthy process as individuals often face many barriers moving forward with their lives. We provide long-term support because we understand that recovery can take a long time and consistent relationships are key to genuine change. We believe no one should have to recover from the impact of exploitation alone. Insightful article from my #Esri colleague Christopher Thomas on changing the conversation regarding #homelessness. Like many complex societal issues, the solution lies in new thinking and collaboration with a pronounced need for location-based analytics and a consideration of #equity. Homelessness and equity are spatial problems and #GIS is the mission-critical, enterprise IT business system that is designed to bring significant value to the solution process. #ArcGIS and the ArcGIS solutions are low-risk, easy to deploy apps that can help across departments, including #PublicWorks. As organizations worldwide establish #VisionZero programs to eliminate #traffic crash injuries and deaths, it is important to remember to consider who is being injured and killed, and where, why, and how can this be mitigated. #URISA #APWA #GIS4PW #AASHTO #transportation #publicsafety #publichealth https://lnkd.in/ezhRd9RJ

Yesterday, I had an opportunity to attend Homeless Link Summer Conference 24’ to listen and engage with professionals in the homelessness and housing support sector. It was great being in a room with like minded individuals who all feel the same about our current political climate. Whether it is PRS, social housing or even ownership, we can all agree that the system is broken. Some of the key points I took away were the following : 1. Create housing policies that are inclusive for all, despite race, age, level of need or socioeconomic status. 2. Regulations with our landlords need to be tightened. 3. Local authorities needs to start identify what their community needs and responding to them appropriately . 4. In order to meet the needs of the current growth in population, we must address our infrastructure. With a new politcal party in place, I am hoping we see some radical changes.

Every year since 2017, USC has been paid by LAHSA to do the annual Point-in-time count of homeless people in Los Angeles. LAHSA have typically released USC’s data for City Council District sheltered and unsheltered totals as well as dwelling types. There was no count in 2021 and in 2023, USC advised LAHSA not to release these numbers to the public. They didn’t, but I accessed them via CPRA. The numbers themselves are hardly surprising, but higher than the year prior. The number of dwellings in the City of LA in 2022 was 13,700 with 7,224 being vehicles and just over 3,000 each of tents and makeshift shelters. Will this insightful data be withheld by LAHSA again in 2024? Why or why not? When I obtain it anyway, will it be surprising??

Working through the Person-Centred Emergency Planning (PCEP) workbook comprehensively with our OTs needs to be funded in our NDIS budgets, or we are forced to choose between goal-directed capacity building and help with figuring out How To (Hopefully) Not Die. Likewise, any* Assistive Technology recommended to address disability-related risks as part of an individual's PCEP needs to be funded as “Equipment To Help Us Not Die Just Because We’re Disabled.” This is especially, critically important for those at greater risk in rural environments. Honestly, it deserves more time than a functional capacity assessment and report, given the context and the need for truly individualised survival plans – and potentially, the time required to operationalise it with our support teams, including for when they are not around. For people with multiple or complex disabilities, which may interact with their environments in complex ways, sufficient time to plan for every likely scenario could be the difference between life and death. That may be a many-weeks project, not an afternoon tick-box exercise. Sounds like more things that are missing from the draft in/out list to me, especially if we cannot simply apply our functional skills to save ourselves in an emergency. * Yes. The mainstream items too, if that is what the person doing the real PCEP planning with us says is required to keep us safe. It’s important to be prepared, to reduce the risk of danger during severe weather periods. Designed with the disability community, Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness (P-CEP) resources help people with disability to create plans to support their needs in the event of an extreme weather emergency. The conversation card and workbook can be used to communicate emergency plans with support networks.
