Scientist and Adventurer - Deputy Lead Head Inflammasome Lab - Senior Research Fellow at UQ Institute for Molecular Bioscience
Younger me was terrified of submitting a paper to any journal - thoughts of rejection and failure were dominant; it felt like being back at school handing in an exam, and the teacher corrected it with a red pen - no feedback, no learning curve. Publishing is different; it is a communication channel with your peers, the Editor, and you to lift up your work. Keen to hear insights from Editors from #Cell #NatureMethods #Science and #BiochemicalSociety? Join us at the end of the month for our ACDS workshop on "From Pitch to Publication - Insights from Editors"
Coming up later this month: our biennial "From Pitch to Publication" Workshop! We're absolutely thrilled to be hosting four incredible speakers: Dr Michael Funk, Dr Cheri Sirois, Prof James Murphy and Dr Rita Strack 👏 Our fantastic panel are all Scientific Editors with invaluable insights from their careers at internationally-renowned Journals, including Nature Portfolio, Cell Press, Science Magazine, Biochemical Society, and more! Join us from 9 - 10.30 am AEST on Wednesday 29th May (via Zoom) to hear Dr Funk discuss strategies for opening communication with Editors; Dr Sirois share her how-to for crafting effective abstracts; Prof Murphy explore how early and mid-career researchers can get involved with peer-review (with tips & tricks!); and Dr Strack guide us on navigating appeals and rebuttals in the post-review process! See flyer for details, including QR code and Zoom link. Event is not restricted to ACDS members; all are welcome, so feel free to share the flyer and details with your friends and colleagues, and let us know in the comments if you're coming! This is not one to miss - we can't wait! 🤩 The ACDS is proudly supported by WEHI (Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research) #earlycareerresearchers #midcareerresearchers #celldeath #PhDstudents #academicpublishing #peerreview La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS) Hudson Institute of Medical Research Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity

📢 Read BBMRI-ERIC’s six key messages for the next European Framework Programme (FP10) in this post. And get the full position paper here: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d3qv8xkD This position paper aims to ensure that FP10 priorities incorporate key fields of health and life science research building on Research Infrastructures, like the European biobanking infrastructure. ❗️#FP10 topic 1: Focus on a “One Health” approach in research. “One Health” promotes cross-disciplinary scientific collaboration. Empowering research in “One Health” using existing ERICs will drive innovation at the intersection of human, animal, and environmental health. ❗️#FP10 topic 2: Accelerate and advance research in the fields of cancer, rare diseases and paediatrics. Combatting cancer must remain a central focus for EU policy and funding to foster synergies of collaborative research initiatives in cancer in FP10. ❗️#FP10 topic 3: Shape the European Health Data Space (EHDS). The EHDS is paramount for future breakthroughs. BBMRI-ERIC, part of the EHDS2Pilot project, explores how to optimally support EHDS implementation regarding the reuse of health data for research and policymaking. ❗️#FP10 topic 4: Strengthen international research partnerships. Working towards global health strategies implies expanding research partnerships across all continents. Funding new collaborations in FP10 will help to align research efforts to jointly address key challenges. ❗️#FP10 topic 5: Consolidate research efforts by enabling access to different funding initiatives. Confining Research Infrastructures to their Work Programmes is a lost chance for a wider use of their resources. FP10 needs overarching concepts across domains and dataspaces. ❗️#FP10 topic 6: Avoid further diversification of the RI landscape. We call upon the EC to channel resources and efforts towards fortifying existing ERICs as strategic assets, and encourage close collaboration with initiatives to avoid fragmentation of the RI landscape.

While Long #COVID is thought to impact hundreds of thousands of people in Australia and around the world, there is little understanding into why the condition and the neurological complications linked to it occur. A new WEHI-led project hoping to solve these unknowns has been awarded over $980,000 in funding from the Medical Research Future Fund (#MRFF) 2023 Post-Acute Sequalae of COVID-19 Grant Opportunity. The research team hopes to unravel the molecular mechanisms in the brain that drive some neurological complications, like brain fog, and also identify biomarkers in the blood that could be used to diagnose patients at risk of developing long COVID. The project 'Clearing the Fog: Defining the molecular mechanism of neurological PASC to identify biomarkers for Long COVID ' will be led by Dr Marcel Doerflinger, Professor Rory Bowden and Dr Maria Tanzer, in collaboration with Dr Emily Eriksson (co-lead of WEHI’s Covid Profile study), Professor Anthony Hannan (The Florey Institute) and Professor seth masters (the Hudson Institute of Medical Research). A brilliant collaboration that could potentially lead to new treatments for long COVID in the future. https://lnkd.in/gWk9iG8D

ALS Clinical Research Coordinator, Karolinska University Hospital / PhD candidate, Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Karolinska Institute
My second PhD paper is out! Last year, I decided to sign-up for a PhD course on systematic review writing at Karolinska Institutet taught by Wim Grooten, and that was one of the best decision from that semester. The class assignment transformed into a bigger project, and really allowed me to explore a topic close to my heart: equity in trial access. When pre-screening for trial, one wishes and aspires to consider an entire patient population in the same way. However, the reality is often quite different than that. The large amount of disease registries in Sweden sparked the interest and idea in establishing a systematic approach to using registries for trial pre-screening, but before that I had to understand what the landscape looked like. Not only in ALS, my primary focus, but for all diseases, globally. A systematic review seemed like a great place to start :) Thanks to all the co-authors: Louisa Azizi, Linn Öijerstedt, Ulf Kläppe and Caroline Ingre for their help, support and feedbacks. One from today. Come listen to the conversation about what methods could make research & innovation funding more fair.
On 23 April we hosted a panel discussing peer review bias. The data shows that peer review does not produce the meritocracy commonly believed in academia. You can watch the recording on our website. On 22 May we host a follow-up panel of funders and researchers discussing what are the alternatives to classic peer review?
