𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐨𝐑𝐨 shipping company 𝐇ö𝐞𝐠𝐡 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 has secured significant financial backing from 𝐄𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚, a Norwegian government enterprise, for the groundbreaking construction of the 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝'𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐚-𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐤 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬 (𝐏𝐂𝐓𝐂𝐬). With a substantial grant of nearly NOK 146 million ($14 million), Höegh Autoliners is poised to pioneer a transformative shift towards environmentally sustainable shipping practices. The funding will facilitate the utilization of alternative and climate-friendly fuel for two of the twelve vessels of Aurora class currently on order. These innovative ships, designed with engines capable of running on liquefied natural gas and low-sulphur oil, in addition to being "𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲" as certified by DNV, represent a bold step forward in maritime sustainability. Last week on Bunkerspot, the who’s who of the #maritime world – including Petrospot Limited's intrepid team of Llewellyn Bankes-Hughes & Lesley Bankes-Hughes and William Mulhall! - descended on #Athens for one of the most eagerly-awaited events in the #shipping calendar - #Posidonia2024. There were multiple announcements, several concerning #ammonia as a #marinefuel. Korean Register announced it had signed an MoU with Samsung Heavy Industries for the development of 9,300 TEU ammonia-fuelled container ships, as well as granting an AiP for an ultra-large ammonia carrier that is being developed in a joint project between KR and SHI. Meanwhile, Lloyd's Register awarded Chinese design company CSSC-SDARI with an AiP for its ammonia-propelled 8,200 TEU containership design. A shift to ammonia as a marine fuel will not just necessitate an increase in associated infrastructure, it will also require a workforce that is able manage it. To that end, MAN Energy Solutions signed an MoU with Eastern Pacific Shipping Pte. Ltd. at Posidonia on the development of crew training for the handling of ammonia as fuel on #vessels. We spoke with UECC’s Daniel Gent who explained how the early signs were promising for the car carrier’s Cashew Nut Shell Liquid-based #biofuel trial. ‘Already we’re seeing very positive results from the consumption of the fuel,’ said Gent during an exclusive interview with Bunkerspot. In other news, Poland-based Unimot Paliwa has started supplying #bunkerfuel in the ports of #Szczecin, #Świnoujście and Police; AURAMARINE announced it had won an order from Meyer Turku shipyard for a #methanol fuel supply system and associated equipment for the TUI Cruises-owned, methanol-ready Mein Schiff 7 cruise vessel; and of the 33 new orders for alternative-fuelled vessels in May, 23 were for methanol, according to the latest figures from DNV’s Alternative Fuel Insight platform. Beginning with the launch of the Stena Germanica in 2015 and the introduction of 11 chemical tankers by Methanex Waterfront Shipping in 2016-2019, and now MI member CMA CGM order of six 15,000 TEU dualfuel methanol-powered containerships, and Ocean Network Express (ONE) #shipbuilding contracts with Hyundai Heavy Industries and Nihon Shipyard to construct five 13,700 teu vessels each, all for delivery in 2025.* As you will see here, there is a broad range of methanol-fueled vessels including pilot boats, tug/push boats, ferries, cruise ships, superyachts, crew transfer vessels, lift and multi-purpose ships. Two Stena Superfast RoRos Next Up for Methanol Conversions Two of Stena Line’s fast RoRos operating between Southland and Northern Ireland have been selected for the company’s planned methanol conversion program. It was reported nearly a year ago that the company was working with Wartsila on the planned conversion of ferries following in the footsteps of its pioneering conversion project in 2015. Conversions to methanol-fueled propulsion are starting to gain momentum in the industry with Maersk and others planning overhauls of their containerships. It also follows the introduction of the first large ocean-going containerships with dual-fuel methanol propulsion plants at the leading edge of a coming wave of introductions. Stena completed the first-ever conversion to methanol in 2015 and continues to operate the only large vessel retrofitted for the emerging alternative fuel. The Stena Germanica pioneered and also provided a critical experience that looks to educate the new efforts.
