The Making of a Nobody Part 76 of TBD Trust = Speed At Nobody Studios, we have an audacious goal of building 100 companies in 5 years. How will we do this? Here's part of the answer that may come as a surprise... Through our culture. How do we move faster, and keep up the pace to reaching our goal? Speed is important, but we'll only go as fast as a culture of trust allows. You can't go fast if you're worrying about how people are going to react if you get something wrong. You can't go fast if you're worrying that you need more time to think something through for a few more weeks. You can't go fast if you think you need five more meetings just to make sure you're covered. You can't go fast if when you leave the room you're afraid of what the person you left behind will do or say behind your back. If you are in an environment where your colleagues are trying to position themselves for credit or acknowledgement by putting you down to heighten themselves, that will immediately slow you down. We believe it's really important just to create that environment that says we are enabled to move fast because we trust and support the people around us. And that means that when we get something wrong, we're going to each other a hug and say, "Wow, but you tried what's next, what did we learn from that?" #culture #NobodyStudios #futureisnow #innovation

Question: Are there any tech companies that openly brand themselves as a "recruiting-first" culture. Akin to when people say "we're a product-first company" or "we're a sales-led culture". As anyone heard of a company publicly and proudly declaring their focus on recruiting?

“Does this have the power to nourish our culture and fortify our values?” That’s the first question I ask myself when evaluating landmark opportunities — be they acquisitions, major investments, or a transformational product concept. Our team is always the priority. Their passion and insights are not mere inputs — they’re the driving force. To me, they matter more than any spreadsheet or balance sheet, and are the heartbeat of what we do. Open dialogue? It's the key to stellar entertainment and unforgettable live experiences. It’s also at the heart of building a business that lasts. Each major decision is made by looking through the lens of harmony with our collective purpose to find a seat for everyone, and our core values. If we make a misstep, the organizational baggage can be daunting, destructive and, – in the worst of times, – irreparable. When acquisition opportunities arise, I meditate on how the prospective business can help us more acutely tune into the heartbeat of the audience experience. Not only to harvest data, but also to cultivate deeper, more authentic connections between humans and technology. For instance, acquiring Show-Score (the Rotten Tomatoes of live theatre) was not about chasing profits. I was entranced by the vision of fostering more open, honest dialogue and community between audience members. We gave the business the time to breathe within our org, evangelizing what was possible, and building consensus across teams. No matter our size, I champion those genuine connections within our team. Through town halls, AMAs, and our employee Ensembles, we don't just work together — we grow together. And, to me, the depth of our relationships is the real measure of success. Everything we do — from product decisions to acquisitions — reflects this ethos. Our community is our greatest treasure.

This is a great book for the nerdy innovator. I work a lot with innovative institutions and organizations that invest in their culture, and I see parallels with them and Bell Labs of the 20th century. Who is hired, how teams are assembled, where offices lie in the landscape of the organization, and what happens outside of the work environment all contribute to a strong (or weak) culture.
