Leadership Strategist | Executive Coach | Keynote Speaker | Researcher | First-Generation Professional
First-Generation College Celebration Day, a bi-partisan proposal now in front of Congress, is recognized annually on November 8 to commemorate the signing of the Higher Education Act (“HEA”) of 1965 by then-President Lyndon B. Johnson. This act created federal financial aid programs to fund students’ educations and made key investments in colleges and universities. Many of the HEA’s programs, particularly the Federal TRIO programs, promote postsecondary access, retention, and completion for today’s limited-income, first-generation college students. If only a college education were an actual equalizer for first-gen college students. I love that these hardworking, resilient, determined students are being recognized. It is tough to be the first in your family to navigate the higher education system. But their stories, which go on post-graduation when they become First-Generation Professionals (FGPs), are often untold. Until now. Our newsletter, First-Gen Rising, shines a light on the FGP experience and posits ways for companies to leverage and lift this unique group of professionals for mutual gain. The opportunities from talent attraction to executive leadership development could be game changers for FGPs and the companies that employ them. Want to learn more? Yesterday, Sen. Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA), along with Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS), led the introduction of the First-Generation College Celebration Resolution, which designates November 8, 2023, as “National First-Generation College Celebration Day," honoring #firstgen students and commemorating the legislative achievements that have provided resources for them. Rep. Gwen Moore (D-WI) and Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) lead the House efforts. Read more about the importance of these efforts, additional Senate co-sponsors, and the full text of the resolution at bit.ly/FGCCResolution23. #CelebrateFirstGen

As the HBCU Business Deans Roundtable, we are closely monitoring legislative developments in Mississippi that could impact the future of our cherished institutions. A bill proposed in the Mississippi State Legislature presents the possibility of closing three state universities by 2028, which could include our valued HBCUs: Alcorn State, Jackson State, and Mississippi Valley State University. It's crucial at this juncture for our alumni networks to engage actively with political officials. Here are ways to get involved and ensure our voices are heard: 1. Stay Informed: Keep up to date with the latest developments on the bill and its implications. 2. Alumni Mobilization: Organize alumni groups to discuss the potential impact and create a unified response. 3. Contact Legislators: Encourage alumni and supporters to reach out to their state representatives and express their concerns about the proposed legislation. 4. Public Forums: Participate in or organize public forums to raise awareness and discuss the contributions of these universities to the state and society. 5. Social Media Campaigns: Use social media platforms to raise awareness and garner support from a broader audience. 6. Listening Sessions: Take part in any proposed listening sessions to represent the interests of the HBCU community effectively. 7.Petitions: Start or sign petitions to demonstrate the collective concern and support for the HBCUs in question. The unity and strength of our network can significantly influence the outcome, and we must work together to advocate for the preservation and continued support of these vital institutions. For more details on the bill and ways to support, please refer to the original post on ClutchPoints and MSN Here: https://lnkd.in/d3nN5fWP #HBCUStrength #EducationalAdvocacy #PreserveOurLegacy #CommunityEngagement
