Credit to Jaime Ruiz Huescar Co-Founder of CITIES FORUM April 12, 2024 5 Skills for Todav's #Transport Planners https://lnkd.in/gPgHtsuZ Like #UrbanPlanning, #TransportPlanning is multidisciplinary, yet it focuses more acutely on creating efficient, sustainable, and inclusive #transportation systems. Here are the essential skills from my point of view that transport planners must have today (this is not an exhaustive list! :) 1). Advanced #DataAnalysis and #SimulationTechnologies: Mastery over Geographic Information Systems (#GIS) and simulation software is indispensable or very much desirable. This tipically involves leveraging data for predictive modeling, capacity planning, and to enhance #TransportEfficiency 2). Deep/good understanding of #SustainableTransport: With the global push towards the United Nations #SDGs, transport planners must bear in mind the principles of sustainable mobility. This includes designing low-emission transport systems, promoting #Active Travel (cycling, walking), and integrating public transport with green urban spaces. 3). Effective #StakeholderEngagement: The ability to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders- governments, private sector, civic groups, and the public-is critical. Transport planners need to facilitate dialogue, manage conflicts, and harness community insights for project success. 4). Regulatory and policy knowledge: A solid grasp of transportation laws, regulations, and policy frameworks at local, national, and international levels ensures plans are viable and compliant. 5). Innovative #Mobility Solutions and #UrbanDesign: Creativity in addressing urban mobility challenges is essential. This encompasses not just the physical design of transport systems but also conceptualizing new service models like #MaaS. Placemaking skills that create vibrant, accessible, and safe spaces are also a superpower.

Interesting ranking of urban transport modes and their emissions from production to operation. Walking, cycling and using public ligth e-transport are clearly the winners. E-cars are better but they have a high carbon footprint in their production phase
