Dispelling Myths about Substance Use: Let's Talk Facts! Peach Tree Health offers substance use medication treatment in a primary care setting and our behavioral health team provides therapy/resource support. We treat ages 15+ for ALL substances. Let's break down some common myths about substance use and replace them with cold, hard facts. Myth: "It's not a big deal, everyone does it." Fact: Not true! In 2022, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health reported that around 23.7 million Americans aged 12 or older needed treatment for a substance use disorder. It's crucial to recognize the impact on individuals and our communities. Myth: "Using substances occasionally is harmless." Fact: The truth is, even occasional use can have serious consequences. According to the CDC, drug overdose deaths reached a record high in recent years, highlighting the potential dangers associated with substance use. Myth: "It's easy to quit whenever you want." Fact: Addiction is complex and often requires professional help. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) states that only about 10% of people with a substance use disorder receive treatment. Myth: "Substance use only affects the individual." Fact: Substance use has a ripple effect on families, friends, and communities.
