Have you ever attended an event that left a lasting impact on you? 🚀 That’s exactly how I felt after attending the Emerge International Tech Conference 2023! As a Digital Marketing Specialist, events like these are crucial for expanding my network and gaining fresh insights. Meeting so many talented professionals working on innovative projects and AI advancements was truly inspiring ✨ One of the highlights was listening to Fonz Morris, the Lead Product Designer for Global Conversion at Netflix. He shared invaluable insights on how design and marketing need to adapt to different markets, considering language and cultural differences. He emphasized the importance of leadership, team building, and collaboration with creative teams. His talk underscored how small details can make a big difference, leaving me motivated to apply these learnings in my work. The opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and learn from their experiences reminded me why I love being part of this dynamic industry. This is a wake up call to creativity as our industry heads to Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. If the holding companies have driven creativity into a state of commodity and AI looms as a fast track to derivative ideas— what does that hold for our future? If once brilliant Apple can now seem soulless, than what’s next? I would look to learning from WARC Inc.,Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity on the growth power and potential of creativity. It does exist… we just need to stop commoditizing creativity and stop dumbing things down. As much as safe and sure is good for a balance sheet, we also have responsibility to our consumers to bring them brand experiences and stories that touch them, touch their emotions, deepen the relationship and forge a stronger bond. Safe and sure may meet the numbers, but will it meet the heart? Challengers, fighters, disruptors and delighters must prevail. Never give up on creativity, never give up on originality, never give up on striving for better. We must keep trying as otherwise we face a future of a lot of days of gray, and I would rather jump out of bed faced with a bright rainbow. How about you? #creativity #creativityatwork.

SXSW Sydney was an incredible way for our team to come together for a week of idea sharing and collaboration. The people, the innovations, the conversation topics. We sat down at the end of the week and shared our top highlights to improve and better inform the way that we work. Here is what we said: - AI improves efficiency and greater productivity, no doubt about it, but nothing can replace the human touch. Our ability to problem solve, think abstractly and apply critical judgement will continue to be important in business. - There's a growing trend of using social and behavioural science in marketing to better understand consumer behaviour to create effective marketing campaigns. - Authenticity has so much value. People are tired of filters and facades, and deeply desire real connection. Publish online content that is about real people living real lives, the good, the bad and the ugly. - How to improve diverse representation in marketing was also discussed, with panels exploring strategies to effectively reach diverse audiences without alienating them. The Enshittification Phenomenon: Understanding the Decline of Digital Platforms In an era where digital platforms dominate our daily lives, a concerning trend has emerged that threatens the quality of our online experiences. Coined by writer Cory Doctorow in 2022, "enshittification" describes the gradual deterioration of online platforms and services over time. This article explores the stages of enshittification, its impact on popular platforms, and potential solutions to combat this growing issue. Enshittification typically unfolds in three stages. Initially, platforms offer high-quality services to attract users. Once a substantial user base is established, the focus shifts to favoring business customers to increase profitability. Finally, platforms prioritize maximizing profits for shareholders at the expense of both users and business customers. This phenomenon has reportedly affected numerous popular platforms, including Facebook, Amazon, Google Search, Twitter, Netflix, YouTube, Reddit, and Uber. The term's significance was underscored when it was selected as the 2023 Word of the Year by the American Dialect Society. The root causes of enshittification lie in the nature of two-sided markets, where platforms mediate between buyers and sellers. As platforms gain more control, they can easily adjust how value is allocated, often to their own benefit. This process is facilitated by user lock-in, business customer dependence, and a focus on shareholder returns. To combat enshittification, Doctorow proposes two main solutions: upholding the end-to-end principle, where platforms transmit data based on user requests rather than algorithmic decisions, and guaranteeing the right of exit, allowing users to leave platforms without losing their data through interoperability. In conclusion, the concept of enshittification provides a valuable framework for understanding the decline in quality of many online services and platforms. As digital ecosystems continue to evolve, it's crucial for users, businesses, and policymakers to be aware of this phenomenon and work towards maintaining the quality and trustworthiness of our online experiences.
