Come with us on a site visit! Last week, CFF visited 4Roots in Orlando’s Packing District to learn more about the innovative efforts happening at their new campus. Founder and CEO John Rivers spoke to our group about the power of a strong local food system, and touched on its impact on overall health (both humans and the planet) and our local economy.🍅 The work happening here creates incremental change in Thrive’s Economic Stability Focus Area, plus has positive implications in Healthcare, as well. You can learn more about Thrive, our region’s blueprint for a healthy, thriving community, at cffound.org/thrive. Why does CFF conduct community research, such as this site visit? As Central Florida’s philanthropic experts, part of our work is knowing our community. We are constantly learning so that we can better understand and be a part of efforts in the region to improve on issues, such as food insecurity and sustainable farming techniques. With this knowledge, we’re able to better coordinate and drive philanthropic efforts, ideation, and strategic action as we work together as a community. 🌱 #CommunityResearch #Thrive #CentralFlorida #SustainableFarming #FoodInsecurity #PhilanthropyEfforts #CommunityCollaboration #HealthyLiving #EconomicStability #LocalEconomy

Gratefully, Talia McAllister, CEO P.S. - We are looking to build a strong Board of Directors made up of volunteers from Fort Worth and surrounding areas who represent diverse industries, historically marginalized populations, under resourced communities, and/or who are knowledgeable about environmental science, nutrition, farming/ranching, community building, advocacy or fundraising. There are 100 reasons to spend time in nature. 🌿 From getting creative inspiration, to channeling your inner hunter-gatherer. 🦣 I get my fix from running through the parks of North London, seeing how the seasons change and letting my mind float along the way. 🧠 Today Hubbub is announcing 100 more: the winners of The Nature Hubs Fund. We’ve just funded 100 community nature projects across the country with grants of up to £6k thanks to the Starbucks 5p Cup Charge. All 100 #NatureHubs are unique. Things like: • Greening a car park at the aquarium in Hull 🐡 • A community garden on a housing estate in Sheffield 🧑🌾 • Woodland restoration (with a creative writing twist) in Worcester 📝 All will bring nature closer to people and people closer to nature. 🔄 Our polling shows that 37% of people in the UK spend less than an hour a week in nature. We're celebrating 100 more reasons to do so with this video. (Spot two of my kids in it at the start!) 🧒 If you want to talk about how to fund and support community-led green space, do drop me a line 📧 ++ P.S. I'm CEO of environmental charity Hubbub. We bring business, government and civil society together to create campaigns that inspire & support people to make choices that are good for the environment. 🥥 Food production, processing, & packaging 🥥 Sustainable Food Forest agriculture & agroforestry 🌳 Non Profit Board & Strategy 🌳 Solar Electricity (PV) & Electromechanical 🌳 Community Engagement & Organization
Couldn’t agree more! It’s why we have been pushing so hard for so long for public urban food forests here in State of Wisconsin. For instance in City of Milwaukee we have The People’s Orchard on public land, in fact it’s on a major road on the way from the highway to the University on the tallest natural hill in the whole city on 1st and Locust. Jim Spotts, Gretchen Mead, Tim McCollow, and Steve Jerbi are just a few of the leaders involved with this one. https://lnkd.in/gQmtpyye In City of Green Bay we have the Seymour Park Food Forest in a city owned public park right by our main downtown Broadway district. This was a joint project between the city and a number of local non profits and the public in that community. Kaurie Mihm, PLA, NEW LEAF FOODS INC, myself, and many others were involved in getting this expanded. We even wrote one of the first publicly available Comprehensive Maintenance Plans that outlines who is responsible for what. We then shared it with others, such as the nearby Universalist Church Food Forest, so they didn’t have to start from scratch. https://lnkd.in/gBFfJa5G Big public facing urban ag food projects like these really get the public interested in more! #foodsecurity #communitydevelopment

I’ve loved helping Hubbub launch their Nature Hubs fund and winners and seeing some of the amazing projects up and running all over the country. On a personal note, community gardening is a topic very close to my heart. Not only am I part of the allotment-holding community, I also volunteer in a primary school, teaching kids how to grow food and look after nature. Every week I witness the pure joy these children feel from seeing their seeds germinate, observing insects and even sampling elderflower cordial from the elderflowers they’ve picked. We need to create a foundation for children to protect and work with nature in the future and I truly believe school and community gardening can play a big role in this. Academic research shows how access to gardens at school can help promote pro-conservation behaviour among pupils. So why is it not more of a priority considering the huge environmental challenges we’re facing? Well there’s no money. Most teachers aren’t trained in this area and just don’t have the capacity. Parent volunteers are scarce as they too are under pressure to work all hours and many don’t have the basic gardening skills needed. I don’t know what the answer is but I can’t help but feel there are solutions out there (local retired garden enthusiasts working with schools?). They just need resource and funding. I do hope the new government takes action on this… but I’m not holding my breath. In the meantime, it’s brilliant to see companies like Starbucks fund community gardening projects and help more people access green space and get closer to nature. Wouldn’t it be great for more of the private sector to help boost school gardening too?

HomeClub looks at hundreds of articles every day. We choose the best ones to share with our readers. This gives you a quick look at what's happening in the home improvement industry. The article below is one we picked. The power of community collaboration in addressing food insecurity is truly remarkable. As highlighted in a recent LinkedIn post by Infinity Exteriors Wisconsin, Infinity New Berlin Team's efforts at the Hunger Task Force Farm in Franklin resulted in an impressive harvest of approximately 3,720 lbs of corn. This initiative exemplifies the significant impact that corporate volunteerism can have on local communities, particularly in supporting vulnerable populations such as low-income children, seniors, and families. By working together, businesses, farmers, donors, and volunteers are creating a sustainable solution to provide fresh, healthy produce to those in need, demonstrating that collective action can make a substantial difference in combating hunger and promoting food security. Thriving nature is essential to healthy cities and communities, but nature is not always considered during the planning process. A Greenprint is an innovative science-based conservation planning framework that reveals the values and benefits of nature and nature-based solutions in community planning. While greenprinting has been adopted across the globe, the resources and guidance to create them and streamline their success have not been easily accessible. This is why TNC created the new Greenprint Resource Hub. The Greenprint Resource Hub compiles the guidance, resources, and strategies necessary for developing and launching a greenprint. This site is a treasure trove of knowledge vital for planners, policymakers, and the public to address community challenges through nature-based solutions. Check out the resource hub to discover the benefits of a greenprint, learn the process for scoping and developing a greenprint, and understand the science and data needs as well as the varying approaches to successful community outreach. The hub offers over 95 examples of greenprints from as close as the Bay Area to as far as Chennai, India. https://nature.ly/3UJd0gD

As you know well, environmental and community health issues are complex and too big to tackle alone. That’s why ICL supports collaborative efforts that together can solve the complex issues. Recently, our board members reflected on “the magic” that ICL brings to collaborations. From their experience with ICL, they said ICL helps collaborations get “unstuck” and have greater impact. "ICL knows how a network works. We can't do everything all at once. So, let's go understand where there's energy, and let's nurture that energy. And they are not overly prescriptive about it. They tap into the group’s potential and their sense of direction." "When I'm talking to ICL folks you end up with a lot of nodding of heads, and then you get to a resolution on things. And I think part of it is because of ICL’s non-profit background, there is that synergy. By asking the right question, the staff member drew that out. That can be hard to do. So really--it is magic." As a small nonprofit organization, we depend on people like you. Through ICL, you can help contribute to solutions for issues like climate resiliency, access to the outdoors, local food systems, and community health. Give today to have a positive ripple effect with collaborations that create environmental and community health! https://lnkd.in/g5Zp_eki #collaboration #leadership #conservation #environmentalhealth #magic #givetoday

On Friday night at the Planet Purbeck Celebration event in Swanage we, the Purbeck Nature Network, launched Purbeck Goes Wild - our programme to deliver the our vision that we created last year: to provide every child and young person in Purbeck with all the experiences and opportunities that the Purbeck landscape has to offer to benefit themselves, communities and nature. We are going to deliver our mission by distributing the assets of Purbeck more equitably. The people, infrastructure, experiences, nature, equipment - it's all there - we'll work collectively to ensure they reach local CYP, (as well as continuing to deliver for visitors obviously). We will increase nature provision in school, and more school trips to the landscape. We're providing a whole host of family events, activities and resources - with information delivered through school newsletters/book bags. Including a 50 things challenge on Wylder app created by Kate Nicholls. And we'll knit together a career pathway/s so that our local kids grow up knowing how they can make a living out of a nature rich landscape, and be at the front of the queue for the jobs and opportunities that will result. It takes a village to raise a child, it'll take our whole community to overcome the many barriers to accessing nature regularly. Whilst we started this process, and Alex Brocklesby has brilliantly maintained the momentum, extracted our collective assets and put them together into a programme, this wouldn't happen without the wide range of people and organisations buying into the need to work together to a collective vision. 25 years in this game... and there has never been a better opportunity to reverse the complex societal disconnection from nature than we have in Purbeck. This isn't a project, this is a new business as normal for all our schools, ngos, landowners, farmers and activity providers. Nature recovery will build more resilient communities, it's already doing so in Purbeck. National Trust Tracey Churcher Rebecca Burton
