From "Uh Oh" to "Oh Yeah!" Didn't expect this at a conference! The Ground Engineering Magazine Piling & Foundations conference in London is always something to remember, with fascinating projects and interesting industry updates, but what truly blew me away was the sharing of the projects where things didn't all go to plan. No 'everything went well', but honesty about project challenges that the speakers faced. This TRANSPARENCY is EXACTLY what the industry needs, it is a game-changer because: Shared Lessons Learned = Collective Progress: By openly discussing failures/mistakes, we all learn and avoid repeating them, which will have impacts on so many elements (H&S, Quality, Sustainability to name a few). Collaboration Over Competition: Even in a competitive field, this honesty fosters a "we're in this together" attitude that leads to better outcomes for everyone. This is how I see us building a more sustainable future together! Building Confidence: Knowing others have faced hurdles is incredibly reassuring and builds psychological safety. It creates a culture where people will feel empowered to speak up and make sure that, going forward, others learn from mistakes already made because we don't have time to make them all ourselves! A HUGE shout out to Christopher Moore CEng MICE, Martin Stanley (CEng MICE FGS), and Chris Dobson for their honesty! Let's make this the start of a movement where sharing mistakes becomes the norm, propelling the entire construction industry forward! ️ To my network out there: I'm relying on you to pick up this challenge and continue sharing your lessons!

Sundt Construction has been around for over 120 years. In that time, the company's grown to about 3,000 employees and does $3 billion in revenue annually. Eric Cylwik, Director of Innovation at Sundt, was gracious enough to sit down with our interview team at the recent Construction Tech Conference to talk innovation. "There's a few different aspects of innovation at a construction company, because construction companies take something that is fully conceptual, drawn on paper, and bring it into the real world," Cylwik says. "Part of the difficulty is aligning the right resources around the right problems. Staying really close to the problem is so important in our industry." To increase low-carbon concrete frequency in project specifications, the Boston Society for Architecture (BSA) and the Carbon Leadership Forum (CLF) Boston/Northeast Hub engaged in a year-long schedule of stakeholder-specific focus groups and cross-disciplinary working sessions. Among top challenges to mass adoption of low-carbon alternatives to conventional mixes, participants cited: Lack of early engagement with concrete suppliers and use of prescriptive specifications. BSA and CLF representatives determined from group and session takeaways that the central barrier to adoption “lies not in a lack of technology but rather in our current design and construction process, which gets in the way of needed collaboration, communication, and mutual education across disciplines.” https://lnkd.in/g98siXFJ
