For over 40 years, Perth has been the training base for Australia’s national hockey teams. The Hockey Australia Centre of Excellence will build on this legacy, transforming the Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University into a purpose-built national hockey centre, securing its place as the home of Australian hockey for the next 18 years. #NDY’s engineering designs will support both performance and sustainability. Heat pumps will power hot water systems for showers and recovery pools, removing the need for natural gas. A rainwater harvesting system will capture stormwater for irrigation, reducing reliance on traditional water sources. These features support the Centre’s goal to achieve 5 Star Green Star certification. Today is the United Nations International Day of Happiness. This year's theme celebrates caring and sharing, emphasising the importance of connecting with one another and sharing stories of happiness and positivity. To celebrate the day, we brought teams together from across #NDY to share what brings them happiness. Together we created a 'wall of happiness' in our offices. Using sticky notes we encouraged our team to write down small things that bring them happiness – people shared books they enjoy, a song that sparks joy, an activity that makes them happy, foods they love to indulge in – and added their sticky to the wall. All the while knowing that their note might inspire someone else in the team to try something new that could bring them some happiness too. We also created the ‘NDY Happy’ playlist. A playlist to lift the mood and get us into a positive frame of mind. You can listen here: https://lnkd.in/gtVwTRja or just search for the ‘NDY Happy’ playlist on Spotify. Share your favourite 'happy' song in the comments and we might add it to the playlist! All of this activity is tied to reminding our people of the resources we provide to support their mental health, including our Employee Assistance Program and access to the The Resilience Project - just 2 tools in the toolkit that make NDY a great place to work. #MakingSpacesWork Tetra Tech High Performance Buildings Group | Cosentini Associates | Glumac | Hoare Lea

Heritage buildings weren’t designed for today’s noise. Many were built before soundproofing techniques and acoustic treatments existed, using traditional materials that amplify rather than absorb sound. Roadworks, traffic jams and digital pedestrian crossings weren’t part of the landscape - streets were quieter and buildings had room to breathe. Now, as cities grow and evolve, these cultural assets are being repurposed. A former printing press becomes a luxury hotel. A high-security bank vault transforms into a bar. Retrofitting acoustic upgrades to suit modern uses while meeting strict heritage regulations is challenging but not impossible. In this piece, Victoria Helena Rastelli Montbrun, Acoustics Section Manager at #NDY, explores how heritage buildings can preserve their history while upgrading for modern acoustic comfort. https://lnkd.in/gyFhCYCi #MakingSpacesWork Tetra Tech High Performance Buildings Group | Cosentini Associates | Glumac | Hoare Lea

"What we've done in the past is not going to fit for the future." We were honored to recently host Craig Pennington of Oracle for a discussion on variable electrical load challenges in AI data centers. In this video Craig discusses the need for us to think differently as we try to solve the new challenges in data center design, including how to solve the potential for load spikes from 100 MW to 30MW, periodically, forever. It's why we've been focused very heavily on liquid cooling and submersion cooling solutions. You can watch the full discussion with Craig and our Mission Critical team from across Tetra Tech, Glumac, Cosentini Associates, NDY, Hoare Lea and RPS here: https://lnkd.in/euig7dsv

Planning consent is in for 48 Chiswell Street, a project that will transform an existing building in Finsbury, London with a ‘re-use first’ approach. Retrofitting comes with big sustainability considerations, and reducing environmental impact takes careful planning. #NDY is proud to have contributed to this successful milestone by providing sustainability advisory towards: 🟢 the development of a Sustainability Statement for planning 🟢 an Energy Strategy that includes operational energy modelling with TM54, NABERS and overheating risk assessment 🟢 a BREEAM assessment 🟢 Circular Economy and Life Cycle assessment studies, including comparisons of mechanical, electrical and public health services and facade options to reduce embodied carbon. Make's retrofit-led refurbishment and extension of 48 Chiswell Street has received planning consent! Commissioned by client Berkeley Estate Asset Management (BEAM), our design proposals for this prominent city block – lying within the Chiswell Street Conservation Area – centre on an extensive remodelling of the existing building to minimise its embodied and whole-life carbon impact, providing modern, flexible offices. The scheme is driven by a ‘re-use first’ approach with approximately 75% of the slabs and 70% of the structural steel frame being retained within the proposed 8-storey building. New interventions such as high-quality and thermally performing facades along with a lightweight 2-storey roof extension utilising low-carbon cross laminated timber (CLT) floor slabs will be introduced. 🔗Read the full write-up and learn more about 48 Chiswell Street: https://lnkd.in/eqmvA2bq https://lnkd.in/e-2sGqp3 Matthew Bugg | Nicholas Tsangaris | Zihan Musthafa | Sam Harper | Peter Pulford | Paul Doctors | Giles Easter | Turner & Townsend alinea | B&CO | Elliott Wood | Newmark UK | Townshend Landscape Architects #48chiswellstreet #retrofit #reuse #commercialworkplace #makearchitects

DESIGNING FOR SPORTS PRECINCTS – PROJECT IN REVIEW | The Coomera Indoor Sports Centre is built for competition, from elite athletes to local sporting communities. Designed for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, it hosted gymnastics and netball finals before transitioning into a long-term home for grassroots sport. BDA Architecture and Peddle Thorp Architects designed a venue that flexes with the moment. During the Games, it scaled up with an additional 7,500 seats for spectators. In legacy mode, it serves as a regional sports facility with 8 multi-sport courts, a dedicated gymnastics space and spectator amenities. Whether it's a packed stadium or a regular training day, #NDY worked with BDA and Peddle Thorp to deliver building services that keep the Centre running. Mechanical ventilation, supported by roof mounted exhaust fans, keeps air moving through the sports halls while high bay LED lighting provides clear visibility across the courts. Energy metering and high-efficiency water heating help manage power use without unnecessary waste. And with built-in power distribution boards designed for temporary generators, the venue can easily scale up to handle major events. DESIGNING FOR SPORTS PRECINCTS – PROJECT IN REVIEW | Stadiums aren’t just about capacity and spectacle. They need to be smarter, more sustainable and built to last. People First Stadium (formerly Carrara Stadium) has been part of the Gold Coast’s sporting scene for decades. From hosting Australian rules football in the ‘80s to welcoming global athletes for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, it has grown with the city. Today, as the home of the Gold Coast SUNS, it’s built for more than just great game days. It’s designed for long-term performance. Sustainability has shaped its evolution. A major refurbishment in 2011 saw People First Stadium become the first in Australia to integrate a solar halo into its roof, supplying 20% of its energy needs through photovoltaic cells (PV). #NDY worked with Populous to design the large-scale PV system, reducing reliance on traditional energy sources while keeping the stadium powered for major events. These upgrades help cut emissions and lower operating costs, making the stadium more resilient for the years ahead. With a cyclone en route to Brisbane and power lines now going down, portable power banks have sold out as fast as toilet paper. Clearly, resilience isn’t something you can panic-buy at the last minute! Batteries have been public enemy number one in the building compliance space of late, but they clearly have a place. Off the back of countless EV and e-bike charging risk assessments, we’re now helping more buildings safely integrate Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). These come with many benefits—energy price security, sustainability, and, as Brisbane is reminding us right now, resilience. I would happily take a BESS in our apartment block right now! #NDY #Resilience #BESS #FireSafety #BatteryStorage #EnergySecurity #BuildingSafety

Today is World Plumbing Day, a reminder that well-designed plumbing systems aren’t just convenient—they’re essential for health, safety and long-term cost savings. But misconceptions about plumbing can lead to poor decisions, unnecessary expenses and even health risks. Cheap upfront doesn’t mean cost-effective. Poorly chosen materials can lead to corrosion, contamination or system failure. And plumbing isn’t just a trade issue—it’s a design challenge that demands careful planning, the right specifications and long-term thinking. In this piece, Brent `Butters’ Marsh, Hydraulics Team Leader at #NDY, explores the most common misconceptions about plumbing and why smart decisions at the design phase make all the difference. https://lnkd.in/dfBntWZX #MakingSpacesWork #PlumbingIsMore Tetra Tech High Performance Buildings Group | Cosentini Associates | Glumac | Hoare Lea | World Plumbing Council
