‘Three-quarters of children want more time in nature, says National Trust’ - The Guardian Charity publishes survey findings as it calls for youngsters to be no more than a 15-minute walk from green spaces. The trust is calling on the government to live up to its previous promise for every person to be 15 minutes away from nature – a target backed by 80% of parents in the survey – by enshrining the access in law. Natural England is working with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to develop methodology for a new baseline for the 15-minute commitment based on walking routes rather than straight-line distances. “The benefits of ensuring access to nature is plain to see but there is unequal access to it. We’d like to see the largest improvement in access to urban green space since the Victorian era. More than three-quarters of children want to spend more time in nature, the National Trust has found, as the conservation charity pushes ministers to ensure youngsters are no more than a 15-minute walk from green spaces. 63% of parents are able to take their children to nature spaces only once a week or less, citing accessibility as the main barrier, the survey of 1,000 children aged seven to 14 and 1,000 parents by the trust and the children’s newspaper First News found. Natural England is working with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to develop methodology for a new baseline for the 15-minute commitment based on walking routes rather than straight-line distances. 31% of parents from lower-income households cited the main barrier to accessing nature as cost. It also revealed that 76% of children wanted to spend more time in nature, while 56% of children wanted better access to nature and green space. As a country, we are big on tree planting, and that's all great. Where we can improve, is aftercare for planted saplings. Luckily, children are happy to help. We estimate that if trees are just planted and no aftercare is provided, the failure rate is anywhere between 30-70% depending on where and when the trees are planted. These nature's babies need tender loving care to thrive. Unfortunately, when speaking about the need for more trees, we often talk about "planting" trees, while we should be talking about "growing" trees. We need to be more deliberate, and it starts with commending the efforts of governments, organizations and communities planting more trees, but also asking how many trees will be standing after 1, 2, 3,5 years. At involvethechildren.org, we recognize the important role that children can play in helping care for young trees in their homesteads, schools and social areas. All children should be involved and, thankfully, children are very excited to participate. Our organization prioritizes working with children from underserved rural communities as they are disporportionately affected by climate change.

The community-based nonprofit is committed to environmental justice in South Richmond, VA, which has a 20-year gap in life expectancy compared to other areas in the region. A recent study found that areas of Southside Richmond were up to 16 degrees hotter than other parts of the city with more trees and plants. 🌴 🌳 Southside ReLeaf focuses on improving the life expectancy and quality of life for Southside residents by increasing green spaces, reducing pollution and improving infrastructure.
