Imagine spending four hours each day collecting water. The journey to the water source is the easy part — even if it’s scorching hot and treacherous. The way back is when things get really hard, because now you have a 40-pound jerry can to carry, in addition to the sleeping baby strapped to your body. With every step, the physical load feels heavier. Not to mention the mental and emotional weight of a life without water — but that’s a load you never get to put down. In many places, the burden of water collection falls primarily on women and girls who lose precious time that could be spent studying, resting, or earning an income. We are back. Back to school and back to more energy facts. Energy poverty significantly diminishes teaching resources and classroom materials, hindering students from completing assignments and accessing up-to-date information. Without electricity, teachers struggle to create copies of assignments, conduct internet-based research, or use online educational materials, ultimately impacting the quality of education they can deliver. Energy has real implications for educational attainment across the world, as well as the indoor air quality has on children’s health and academic performance. The past weeks have been draining. Referring to one of my posts where I mentioned how excited I was about working with a client (a doctoral student from the University of Leeds, UK). Her research was based on the exposure of school children (aged 10-12) to particulate matter in the air, in schools and homes and she needed an African context. We had quite some difficulty in recruiting participants into the study. Someone who told us he could get us the study participants since he is also in the field couldn't come through like we had expected. The fact that we were required to install a device that measures this parameter in the homes of selected kids, met with a lot of parental rejections, which was expected to an extent. The first few days of week 1 were a struggle, trying to get consents from parents to use their homes. However, at the end of the week, we were able to successfully recruit all participants needed. Things began well and we were able to get very kind participants who were willing to help charge the device with the power source provided whenever it ran low, we had others who were so enthusiastic about the research and curious about the outcome, we had a parent offer us meal when we went to take some readings at her residence. Although, this research has been overwhelming, however ,I'm grateful for the challenge, the gift of people and I've learnt the power of utilizing a well-laid down informed consent. #environmentalhealthresearch #airpollution #climatechannge

The Economic Term of The Week simply means, an unmanaged resource in a world with limited wealth materials and unlimited desires ends up in ruin. Tragedy of The Commons majorly depends on; ✓ Number of users wanting to consume a resource/common at hand ✓ Consumption nature of users of the common/resource ✓ The Relative Robustness of the common/resource. Whereas Tragedy of The Commons might lead to depletion of resources due to overuse, such a situation can be countered from future occurrence by developing better policies to ensure resources are used sustainably and efficiently. #economicempowerment #economicterms #economicpolicies #learnbykuesaku

It is a matter of fact that youth cooperation for the betterment of society begins from home. Kids learn the main exercise of tidiness, effective usage and saving of water and power, cultivating, and different such issues from home. It is the first responsibility of guardians or family members to instill great propensities in kids’ and show them neatness and astute use of common assets, such as power and water. 📎 https://lnkd.in/dXibjvkJ #environment #youthparticipationmatters #environmentday2021 day2021

Sharing Dunning Kruger in a moment of frustration. Working in general practice, I see people suffer through climate extremes and the Covid pandemic. Sometimes my tolerance gets tested. This time it ended in a sentence about boiling bats. 😩 We all have these testing moments. I have met thousands of people in my lifetime. I always try to remember 1. Health and science literacy in the community is variable. 2. Critical thinking is crucial when assessing a premise. This skill is not taught at school and should be to all students. ( this is a blanket statement- some schools do ). 3. Everyone has internal biases. Including me. 4. The complexities of people’s lives and experiences will colour their views. Always be open and listen. Building community takes patience and understanding. We need to build bridges. #climatehealthcrisis #protectnature #fossilfuelskill #cleanenergyfuture

Attention Span Lower than a Goldfish. The Attention deficit Economy #wisdom #awareness #dopamine We have attention spans lower than a Goldfish. This inability focus has implications for all aspects of our lives. Our attention is the most valuable commodity out there. Researchers in Canada surveyed 2,000 participants and studied the brain activity. Microsoft found that since the year 2000 (or about when the mobile revolution began) the average attention span dropped from 12 seconds to eight seconds. Join me for The Silence Experience to regain your attention and focus it on what truly matters. The survey also confirmed generational differences for mobile use; for example, 77% of people aged 18 to 24 responded “yes” when asked, “When nothing is occupying my attention, the first thing I do is reach for my phone,” compared with only 10% of those over the age of 65. And now congratulate yourself for concentrating long enough to make it through this post. The Silence Experience is on the 22nd of September in Cape Town @bokaapdeli. Link in bio.
