✈️ With the UK government announcing their support for expansion to a third runway at Heathrow, why not read our research paper on 'Net zero and the role of the aviation industry'. "While the aviation sector is a critical contributor to the global economy and provides important benefits enabling travel around the world, the sector is notoriously difficult to decarbonize. Most supply-side options for reducing aviation carbon emissions – such as zero-emissions aircraft and sustainable aviation fuels – are yet to be scaled and are still at the R&D phase." 📄 Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/eEf2KKMK ✒️ Dr Daniel Quiggin

🌍✈️ The Path to Net-Zero: Decarbonizing Aviation 🎬 "The aviation industry has committed to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050 to contribute to the Paris Agreement. But airlines remain heavily reliant on fossil fuels, so governments will need to adopt ambitious policies to promote low carbon fuels, to boost fuel efficiency, and to moderate traffic growth in mature markets. In tandem, work is needed to attract an estimated $6 trillion in new investments through 2050." — Dan Rutherford at The International Council on Clean Transportation. 🏁 At the upcoming IMPACT Forum on Dec 2 & 3, 2024 in London, co-hosted by IMPACT on sustainable aviation, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and WTW, leaders from science, policy, and finance will convene to address exactly these challenges. This two-day event is a unique platform for candid discussion about the progress gaps in aviation's decarbonization journey. As Dan highlighted, initiatives like these are crucial in fostering cooperation to mobilize both attention and capital toward sustainable aviation solutions. 🤝 The aviation sector's decarbonization is a task too vast for any one stakeholder. Together, with targeted policy, innovative financing, and impactful industry actions, we can shape a more sustainable future. Engage! Hugo Kanters Bryson P. 🌍✈️ Tackling Record-High Emissions in Aviation: A Call to Action by Annie Petsonk at the IMPACT Forum In 2024, the aviation industry is projected to see record-high passenger numbers, but also record-high emissions. While the introduction of new aircraft and operational improvements may slow the rate of emissions growth, they won’t reverse the trend. As Annie P., Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation, emphasized at the Impact Forum 2024, we must break the link between traffic growth and emissions growth. This means going all-in on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (#SAF). SAF offers a sustainable pathway, reducing CO2 emissions on a life-cycle basis and cutting harmful soot and particle emissions. The U.S. SAF Grand Challenge has the following targets: 🔹 2030 Goal: 3 billion gallons of SAF 🔹 2050 Goal: 35 billion gallons of SAF Annie was clear that the 2030 target was the bigger challenge. While tax credits and grants are key tools available in the U.S., the U.S. is helping other countries by building partnerships, such as connecting U.S. scientific institutions with global universities for feasibility studies. She suggested that the various stakeholders in the IMPACT Forum take action: ✅ Policy alignment: Incorporate SAF demand into every law, policy, and program ✅ Accountability: Establish robust systems to track and validate emissions reductions ✅ Aircraft lessors’ involvement: Ensure leases demonstrate CORSIA compliance 🔗 Pls also see the US Aviation State Action Plan 2024: https://lnkd.in/dhFH5Ndm The message is clear: We can’t achieve Net Zero in aviation alone. Everyone — governments, lessors, operators, and stakeholders — has a role to play in scaling SAF and driving innovation. Let’s work together to decouple aviation’s growth from its environmental impact. 💡✈️ What actions will you take to support SAF adoption? Let’s discuss! #SustainableAviationFuel #Decarbonization #Aviation #NetZero #Sustainablefinance #Aviationfinance #Aircraftleasing Dr. Ulrike Ziegler Michael Rurik Halaby, FRAeS Bryson P. The journey towards achieving net-zero aviation began years ago as airlines and industry stakeholders acknowledged the pressing need to address aviation emissions. A pivotal moment arrived in 2022 when the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) established the goal of attaining net-zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from international aviation by 2050. As the industry evolves, emerging technologies like sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) and electric propulsion are taking center stage in the quest to reduce emissions. However, implementing net-zero strategies isn't without its hurdles. Technological barriers, regulatory complexities, and financial considerations all pose significant challenges along the way. Despite these obstacles, the aviation sector remains committed to overcoming them and achieving its environmental goals. Learn more at: https://lnkd.in/eTQgpFQG

Let’s be honest. If you’re reading this, you do not need a re-telling of the hard facts: 💚 You know that the aviation industry is going to be incredibly hard to decarbonise. 💚 You know that despite the seemingly insurmountable challenge ahead of us, the industry is committed to the 2050 net zero goal and exploring many significant approaches. 💚 You know that if we do nothing, our current contribution of 2-3% to global emissions will increase to as much as 25% by 2050. Given the state of affairs, the question of what the industry can do about sustainability is rife with controversy, speculation and divided opinions. In such a scenario, an airline executive working in sustainability might be tempted to give in to hopelessness or despair. At SimpliFlying, we attempt to provide an antidote to such pessimism. Our inaugural Sustainable Aviation Outlook report offers hope, reassurance, answers and some helpful suggestions along the way. 🔥 Grab your digital copy at https://lnkd.in/dyNdGUCA Special thanks to our partners Cirium and ENVEST GLOBAL for the rich and comprehensive data that has further helped us paint a vivid picture of the current aviation landscape. #sustainableaviation #futureoftravel #airlines #netzero

Thrilled to see this important piece of thought leadership out there in the world, as we soon enter the 25 year countdown to the aviation industry's collective net-zero target. Thank you Philippa Nuttall Sustainable Views for publishing Jean-Christophe Lambert's views on why the industry needs to move far beyond its reliance on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) if net-zero is to be a reality. Jean-Christophe believes that the aviation industry's commitment to reducing its emissions demands more than a shift in fuel types; it requires a transformative approach driven by a combination of hybrid-electric technologies, hydrogen and SAF.
