Tallinn has been working for many years to integrate the UN Sustainable Development goals to our city governance. At the moment we are part of the Cities for Sustainability Governance project which works on holistic sustainability through strategic use of SDGs. 🌍 Cities, Sustainability, and Storytelling for Change: Key Takeaways from Braga This week, I had the opportunity to participate in the Cities for Sustainability Governance (CSG) project meeting in #Braga, where we explored key topics like storytelling for change, gender equality, and how the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) should be the universal language guiding urban policy decisions. The UN SDGs are at the heart of creating cities that consider the needs of all citizens and nature, and this meeting provided valuable insights for my work on developing the sustainability governance communication plan for Tallinn. 💡 Key takeaways for me: 1. Storytelling is a powerful tool: Cities and sustainability are complex topics, but storytelling can connect citizens on an emotional level, fostering engagement and ownership. 2. Change leadership vs. change management: Storytelling for sustainability is about leading with inspiring examples and positive emotions, not just managing change. 3. Inclusive urban spaces: Much of our public space has been designed by men, for men. It’s essential to consider women’s unique perspectives on safety, comfort, and happiness in these environments. 4. Social justice and sustainability: When addressing sustainability, we must also factor in social justice—ensuring equitable outcomes for all citizens. 5. Small actions, big impact: There are many simple, tangible steps cities can take to improve the well-being of their citizens. Finally, I can't help but note how inspiring Braga is—a beautiful city that leads by example in sustainability and the implementation of the UN SDGs. Post-2030 Agenda: The Role of Cities in The New Era of Sustainable Development A key aspect of the SDGs, as a people-centric development approach, is recognising that Local Governments are vital to designing the Visions and Strategies for the Future essential to the "Pact for the Future" (Post-2030 Agenda). IT IS CLEAR THAT TO IMPLEMENT SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, MAYORS NEED TO BE AT THE FOREFRONT OF GLOBAL PUBLIC POLICIES. It was an honour to be invited as a professor and researcher at Universidade Católica Portuguesa and Cesop Local to contribute to the discussion on "How can research and innovation support cities implementing the SDGs and The Pact for the Future?" Great piece of information and worth reading Cultural life, integral to human wellbeing, is key in sustainable development, as highlighted by the Mondiacult 2022: Declaration for Culture from 150 UNESCO Member States. It emphasizes cultural rights and heritage in building a just, equitable world. Cultural heritage, a collective inheritance, informs and enriches society, playing a central role in The British Council’s Cultural Heritage for Inclusive Growth program in Vietnam, Kenya, and Colombia. These initiatives promote local heritage, aligning with UN SDGs 3 and 8, focusing on inclusive economic growth and social welfare. The approach changes development perspectives, enabling community-led, culturally sensitive solutions and facilitating important discussions on challenging topics such as colonialism and inequality. The British Council's Learning Gathering in Kenya explored cultural heritage as a core of human development and a dynamic focus for a sustainable future. The Cultural Relations approach fosters trust, understanding, and cooperation, supporting peace and justice. Integrating heritage into sustainable development offers inclusive, self-determined solutions, highlighting the importance of understanding cultural differences for equitable, context-appropriate development.

Today the annual inclusive forum on sustainable development has been launched

Our latest article in the renowned journal Nature Sustainability is setting the agenda for #SDG localisation, an important step in bringing us closer to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. SDG localisation is about adopting the global goals in national and sub-national geographies and organisational contexts, and is recognised as a key mechanism for achieving the SDGs. Led by A/Prof. Shirin Malekpour, the article reflects on MSDI's 7 years of research and advocacy on SDG localisation in Australia and internationally to provide recommendations on what localisation should look like in the years ahead. Metropolises worldwide are joining forces with UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) to track progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs) through Voluntary Metropolitan Reviews (#VMRs). These reports showcase successful strategies for #sustainabledevelopment in the metropolises, fostering knowledge sharing and boosting local and metropolitana action on issues like #greenspaces, #climatechange, and #mobility. The new URBACT call is out! Innovation Transfer Networks will foster the replication of practices and approaches succesfully developed with Urban Innovative Actions projects. Cities and public equivalent bodies from EU27 + countries in pre-accession can join a network composed of 5 to 7 partners having as lead partner one of the UIA cities.
