How many times has your cat or dog or other pet accidentally gotten out of your home or yard? Did you know that if they are brought into an animal shelter, the fees to reclaim your pet can be in the hundreds or even thousands of dollars? Economic disparities mean that pet owners with lower disposable income are not able to bring their pets home from a shelter. Animal shelters and animal control agencies recognize that this a barrier to reuniting pets with their families and disproportionally affects communities that have been marginalized. “48% of (shelter) intake in the US were strays, and only 9% were returned to their owners” - those are heartbreaking stats. When a pet becomes lost, the best outcome is to get that animal back home, fast! The finder-to-foster program model works to do just this; keeping animals out of the shelter. And it’s had great success in the U.S.! Some shelters have doubled or even tripled return-to-home rates with the program, plus increased adoptions to boot. Jenifer Reed and Heather Kalman, who are with Human Animal Support Services at Austin Pets Alive! shared strategies with #ICAM2024 to successfully implement this type of program in your shelter. Here in the US we have a crisis hidden by a broken system within animal services and the public served. This is not the shelter staffs fault. As a nation we want it when we want it. It's time to rethink animal shelter processes . If you think about it buying and selling of pets is the only market we have not gotten under control. take a look at craigslist ,under pets. thousands of rehoming ads.aka for sale. We need to build a system that gives them what they want , the ability to shop for pets without the guilt of a shelter experience. I have created a plan that will reinvent our handling of lost and homeless pets.Decrease the killing , take the burden off the city and county while taking the financial costs off the rescues for vetting. including an adoption center that allows same day adoption of decompressed and fully vetted animals . Sounds impossible but it's not I have obsessed over this for 20 years and made a plan of action. I need help to get it off the ground . the simplicity of it will blow your mind.

Lifesaving animal shelter policy: - Do not impound eartipped community cats. They are already home outdoors and have been spayed or neutered. - If a non-eartipped community cat is impounded, immediately practice #TNR. Community cats are generally not adoptable and are extremely stressed in a shelter environment. TNR is the only humane, effective approach. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/eWymq-7z

We love pets, and across the world, millions of happy pets are part of loving families and communities. But some pets aren’t so lucky.
