It's been about Six Months since I've joined the Submarine Multi-Mission Team Trainer development team with Leidos, so I figured I'd share an update. The move to Maryland to South Carolina was challenging. It took us about four months to find a home in Mount Airy, which is just this idyllic town in central Maryland that my family absolutely loves. Our kids are thriving in their schools, our neighborhood is fantastic, we love the community and the city. Being on the SMMTT development team has been amazing. It's been a return to something that I spent the majority of my life doing, working with #Sonar systems and supporting the Submarine Force. I've been drinking from the fire hose on software development, learning how to manage projects though the Atlassian suite, getting back into using Linux, learning about exciting new things (to me at least) like Kubernetes, and expanding my knowledge of virtualization and networking within the newer Sonar Systems deploying to our #Submarines. I think the thing I like the most though is just being around submarine-minded people again. Almost everyone I work with is a former Sonar Tech, Fire Control Tech, or Submarine Officer. There is a lot of laughter in my days, it's nice to be around others with the same work ethic and devotion to duty, but also with that gallows sense of humor that can only come from driving a submarne very close to other submarines that don't know you're there. When I first #retired from the #Navy, I told myself I did not want to be around the Navy any more. I know there are a lot of people that feel something similar, especially if it's medical things that have compiled and you're just TIRED of it. I had four different positions in the two years in between retirment and finding this position with Leidos. I left all of those jobs on good terms, but for reasons that made sense for myself and my family. I realized working from home wasn't for me. I realized I didn't want the pressure of a commission-based pay system. I realized I enjoyed being in leadership positions. I gained some of my confidence back after some struggles with depression, anxiety and recovery from an eating disorder. I realized that I had spent a lot of time in the world of Sonar. That I was a good leader. I had some people reach out to me and remind me that despite how sad I was to leave the Navy, I was good at it, and did a lot of good for other people during my time in. So when the opportunity came to get directly back into the world I came from, I jumped on it. I spent many evenings complaining about the Attack Centers when I was in the Navy, now I get to have an impact on hopefully making some other young Sonar Technician better at their job and maybe give them a less frustrating experience after a long day in the trainers. I walk out of work, even after long days with a smile on my face. I'm professionally fulfilled in a way that I haven't felt in a long time. Life at Leidos is great!

***Industry Service Announcement*** Check on your Northrop Grumman friends! In what "seems to be" a recent trend in the space industry, per a recent WARN notice, NG employees will be the next to feel the effects of a mass layoff :( While NG hasn't detailed the reason for the impending mass layoff, Bloomberg reported 2 weeks ago that Space Force cancelled a classified satellite project they had with NG. As a result, the cancellation of that project is expected to cut NG's space portfolio by $2 billion. Yikes!
