🌬️ In the race against climate change, the shipping industry stands at a crucial crossroads, with wind propulsion offering a promising pathway to decarbonisation. While regulatory bodies like the IMO and EU push for climate neutrality by 2050, uncertainties in regulations and technologies hinder progress. Yet, wind propulsion systems present a game-changing opportunity, reshaping the maritime narrative towards sustainability. 🛣️ Integrating these systems poses challenges, from stability concerns to operational limitations, demanding a holistic approach to implementation. Despite regulatory gaps, classification frameworks like BV's Rule Note NR 206 provide a roadmap for safe integration. Collaborations, such as BV's project with HHI and TotalEnergies, validate wind propulsion's feasibility, exemplified by vessels like the Canopée cargo ship. 🚢 Retrofitting existing vessels underscores both challenges and opportunities, driving BV's involvement in projects like Bound4Blue's suction sails on Ville de Bordeaux. As the industry gears towards decarbonisation, wind propulsion emerges as a beacon of hope, with increasing adoption signalling a shift towards a greener maritime future.

Two weeks ago we were unveiling Mammoth, the world’s largest carbon removal via direct air capture facility, in Iceland. Its groundbreaking was announced just a few weeks before I joined Climeworks, less than 2 years ago. It was quite stunning to see it built and starting to remove carbon permanently from the air in such a short time, to see it on site among team members who had been working tirelessly through the harshest of conditions, but also with major stakeholders from the ecosystem and beyond, among a handful of reporters, photographers and videographers from major media and dozens more joining us online. Since then you may have seen the news on CNN, CNBC, The Times, caught a mention on Saturday Night Live, read stories ran from the original coverage by AFP, or maybe missed it, as I probably would have not that long ago. About two weeks before that, we had announced the launch of Climeworks Solutions, stating again that reaching net zero will require DAC and much more than DAC as part of several carbon removal solutions and alongside drastic emissions reduction. In two weeks, we will host the Climeworks Carbon Removal Summit in Zurich. We will unveil major technology updates for the first time and publish new data powered by 200+ engineers and scientists as part of now over 500 Climeworkers worldwide. I will also be celebrating my 2 years with Climeworks then. What a journey, the speed and pace in this industry and company are incredible, the topic so intellectually stimulating. It’s not an easy road, but the challenge is well worth it. Thanks to all working on this since then, before that and now. The race to net zero has begun, it’s a marathon, and so far I’ve only ran halves. Daunting? Maybe at times. Worth the sweat? Definitely. Exciting? I let you judge.
