It is amazing all of the things I have learned over the course of this internship. I have learned the importance of measuring twice and cutting once, I learned how to shoot grade for the structure of buildings and how important that is with how thick the concrete needs to be. I have also been taught the importance of laying sewer lines and the slope for the best drainage. #Everbuilt #CTEInternship

In 2023 as a whole, I have learnt a lot. If I start listing them, it starts to sound like a brag. Updating my LinkedIn regularly would be a better idea than a year-end dump of all I've done. It started with an update of my portfolio, applying to different firms for my internship, interviewing and deciding the pros and cons of working in each firm. Volunteering and attending workshops at NIUA. Getting certified in software. Working with people in the industry and gaining a humanised perspective of the field of architecture. The last bit sounds funny but it's the most profound thing that I've come to realise. While studying all I saw were the buildings, bricks, RCC, services, sheets, and submissions. I never saw the people behind it all. Cursing the architects of the building we have to survey because the levelling of the staircases is weird *cough* Triveni Kala Sangam *cough*. That is something to be discussed some other time. The main takeaway is that the building isn't faulty because it's made by a man. To err is human. Rather the building is incomplete for the future to improve. In the end, i'll leave you with something funny that happens to everyone at some point, until the next post...

Today is my last day of interning with DLB Associates this summer. I cannot emphasize enough how appreciative I am of this firm and its people! I learned so much, and was able to work on some amazing projects with my team! I felt so supported by my manager Jaron Deal, and peer buddy Alan Fitts. I would also like to shout out Neil Chauhan and Heather Lombardo for their consistent encouragement and positivity. For most of the summer, I worked on a comprehensive PIPE-FLO model of a chilled water system in a data center. Through that model, I learned about chilled water systems, chillers, pressure, flow, how pumps work within those systems, different kinds of valves, design of a data center, and overall how to solve problems as we ran the simulation. After designing the model, Jaron, Alan and I wrote a report on the model and various different failure scenarios, which are an essential part of design for mission critical facilities. Through the report, I got to work on technical communication and documentation, and failure analysis. Aside from the PIPE-FLO project, I spent a lot of time working on Revit models for data centers as well. In a similar vein as my PIPE-FLO model, I helped to design a chilled water system for a mission critical data center. Revit is an extremely powerful tool that I am really excited to continue learning. One of my favorite parts of engineering is design work, so I really enjoyed my time on this software. Apart from the design aspect in Revit, I also learned how to select and place expansion tanks in a model for certain projects. A few days of my summer I spent working on AutoCAD design for mechanical systems and worked with Trane/Trace for heating loads. Already having some experience with both, it was fun to be able to go back and grow my skills. Along with hard skills concerning software and design, I would also like to emphasize the soft skills that I learned to apply more deeply this summer. I wrote "A Letter to Summer Interns" to share those aspects of my learning with future interns/ Co-op members. That document is attached. It is such a blessing to me to have been able to learn from and contribute so much to DLB this summer. This is the sort of work that feels significant and meaningful. I am looking forward to connecting with DLB Associates in the future!

𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒊𝒔 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒇𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑰 𝒑𝒖𝒕 𝒎𝒚 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒕 𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆… One of the regular working days during my student internship, I followed the Chief surveyor to a particular site for survey work. I did not know I was going to get mud bath for my feet😂 I was super uncomfortable and the me of that time was never ready to get uncomfortable. I had a Chief that was always ready to push people to get the best out of them I had no choice but to get in there because he asked me to. I will be honest with you, I was displeased but I did it eventually. Today, that project; 🏗️Soars 10 stories into the sky 🏗️Is thriving on an investment platform and is set for successful completion next year I no longer work on that project but I’m proud to have left my foot print there. In mockery, a colleague took that photo but now it has become a milestone snapshot. So what are you doing that’s discomforting you? Take a different look at the challenge the daily tasks bring. Why is hands on, real-world experience so essential for students? Robb Berg, Principal of Design Workshop, highlights the importance of shaping the next generation of landscape architects through involvement outside the traditional classroom environment. There is often a gap between the theoretical approach taught in the classroom and the practical application on real projects. "Working for communities and with clients means understanding construction budgets, managing time constraints, navigating material limitations, and many more challenges, all the while trying to create meaningful and impactful work," says Robb. It is important to invest in this upcoming generation of young professionals, and Design Workshop’s Design Week and the Dr. Charles Fountain Internship Program are two examples of how we are providing practical experience for undergraduate and graduate students. This video is from one of my site visits in Hanover, VA. They were digging test pits here to see what type of soil was there. This was all previously used soil, so the client can decide (if it's strong enough) to use it to fill in somewhere else on the site, or they can sell it! Summer has arrived and newbies are joining your projects. Go back in time and recall your first days in construction. The jobsite looks and sounds chaotic. The jargon used on site sounds like a foreign language. Here is a recent quote from a young field engineer - "As a novice in the industry, I felt an overall uncertainty about all the details. I had to learn on the fly - leaving me quietly Googling terms or asking embarrassing questions to my superintendent."
