Tech-Ed for Good is a series of videos created by lecturers throughout the Faculty of Computing, Digital and Data, TU Dublin that showcases how the work undertaken in the Faculty has a positive influence on society, the environment, our communities, and that helps to shape the positive use of digital technology. "Imagine you apply for jobs but never hear back. Imagine you search for a home for your family but are never successful. Imagine you experience harassment or violence that leaves you deeply traumatised." This quote is taken from the 2023 European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights "Being Black in the EU: Experiences of People of African Descent." The report highlighted many challenges that persist for our community living in the diaspora. The findings in the report are alarming as many echo the survey results from our 2020 Sangano Black Business Hub report, suggesting that little has changed in the last four years, despite more visibility. This year's Sangano Hub Bi-Annual Entrepreneurship Survey is an important tool for understanding the nuances of the challenges that people of African Descent face and how what resources and support are needed to address these issues. Your voice is essential in shaping institutions, supporting organisations and the entrepreneurial ecosystem Black entrepreneurship. Where there is lack of diversity, there is lack of diverse thoughts. While inclusion has always been a fundamental driver to make our society fair, it’s even more important today when we are trying to teach machines to take decisions like humans and talk like humans. Lack of diversity, may lead us to pass on our own biases to machines through historical processes and data, and through algorithms we code. For example, when trying to build a model that can decide who is credit worthy using historical data, the historical biases that exist in processes may end up getting copied. Same goes for transformation programs or any other work for that matter. Power of #collectivewisdom is driven by better #inclusion and by embracing #diversity. Study after study shows the positive impact diverse teams have on businesses. Diversity is a prerequisite for the best collaboration and creative thinking. It's on us, as business leaders, to push for and make progress.

Marlo Rencher, PhD, CDE and Dawn Batts, Ph.D., two TechTown team alumni and architects of several of our organization’s entrepreneurship programs, recently had their research published with two other colleagues in the Journal of Business Anthropology! 👏 Their essay, “Re-Centering Race in Emancipatory Entrepreneurship: Black Female Tech Founders, Money, and Meaning in a Detroit-Based Incubator Program,” explores “the perceptions and attitudes of Black female tech entrepreneurs towards capitalism in the context of an incubator program in Detroit” and the importance of understanding “minority entrepreneurs’ historical inequalities and lived experiences with capitalism.” Data presented in this essay comes from an ethnographic study of STEM Entrepreneurial Excellence Program (STEEP), our business incubator program. This is a good article. It addresses this pertinent question. How do we respond when lawmakers have proposed at least 81 bills in 28 states and the U.S. Congress aimed at curbing or eliminating DEI efforts? Well, we know that that giving up is not a response. We have to continue to frame the work in terms of providing the resources necessary to enable people in both historically marginalized groups and historically privileged groups to thrive. "More specifically, Dovidio suggests clearly articulating the broader goals of EDI, including productivity, fairness, justice, and building a society where everyone has the opportunity to achieve their full potential. Advocates can also explain that EDI brings together all groups (including those who have traditionally held power in society, such as White men) and that efforts to improve diversity are win-win (one group benefitting does not mean another group loses). Existing EDI programs could also be reworked to better reflect what psychologists know about creating change. Efforts to change individuals and to broaden the understanding of the science of diversity may lead to reactance and lack effectiveness over the long term.
