This month, we recognize and honor the incredible foster families who open their hearts and homes to children in need. Foster care plays a crucial role in providing safe, nurturing environments for children who have experienced trauma and instability. Here’s how you can get involved and make a difference: 💙 Support Foster Families: Offer your time, resources, or a helping hand to foster parents in your community. Simple acts of kindness can make a huge impact! 👶 Consider Fostering: Have you ever thought about becoming a foster parent? There are many children who need a loving and stable home. Reach out to local agencies to learn more about the process and how you can help. 📣 Raise Awareness: Share information about foster care on social media to help spread the word. Knowledge is power, and your voice can help educate others about the importance of foster care. 🤝 Volunteer or Donate: Many organizations support foster children and families. Find a local or national organization to volunteer with or donate to, ensuring they have the resources they need. The average number of placements for youth experiencing foster care is 8.3. Now, read that statistic above again. If a child has moved to five or more placements, they’re facing a 90% chance of being involved with the criminal legal system. Every relocation erodes stability, relational permanency, and normalcy for youth experiencing foster care – all things critical for young people, no matter the circumstances, to thrive. We know the foster care system isn’t perfect. We know it’s in crisis. But systems don’t create deep, trusting relationships – people do. Where the system fails to provide stability and support when young people need it most, our communities can. Our programs partner with community members across the country to radically change the foster care experience – both for the children and youth experiencing foster care, and the families who open up their doors to foster. The fewer placements youth endure, the more likely they are to overcome the statistics they face. Decreasing placements for youth experiencing foster care (placement stability) is a cornerstone of our mission and programs – and every person can have a role in it. Some choose to foster. Think of something you are good at or something you enjoy and get creative! Here’s just a few ideas! 🫶 📍Pray for the foster care community. 📍Become a foster parent. 📍Sign up to Volunteer with our organization. 📍Become a CASA Volunteer. 📍Make a one time donation to our organization or become a monthly sponsor to help us continue to provide resources. 📍Donate clothing or needed items to our Clothing Closets. 📍Host drives for Together We Fosters needed items such as hygiene products, pajamas, diapers and wet wipes. 📍If you know a foster parent, offer to babysit or cook them a meal- and check in often to see what needs you can assist with. 📍Put together Reunification Baskets 📍Cook or purchase meals for our Manna Meals Freezer. 📍Tell your friends and family how to get involved! 📍Sponsor a child for Christmas and purchase gifts from his/her wishlist. 📍Get your church involved! As with many states, Pennsylvania currently has more children in the foster system than there are families available to take them in.
