On #WorldCitiesDay, it is vital to recall the importance of cities and urban regions for migratory species. Migratory species don’t just pass through remote oceans and mountains – they also travel through our very own cities! In fact, urban green spaces, rivers, and wetlands often serve as essential stopover points to rest and feed during their long journeys. 🏙️ 🐦 This past 27 October, CMS welcomed ICLEI's launch of Journeys for Life – an initiative supporting the objectives of the Convention on Migratory Species. Journeys for Life is a platform for cities that are located along migratory routes of specific migratory species, to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, resources, and best practices. At the launch, ICLEI announced the first cohort of cities subscribed to the programme: Seattle, USA; Barranquilla, Colombia; Cocody, Ivory Coast; and Varzaneh, Iran. 👏 📺 Watch a recording of this exciting announcement (3:40-minute mark), which was made at the 8th Summit for Subnational Governments & Cities at #COP16Colombia: https://lnkd.in/dCd5kF_P 🖱️ Find out more about Journeys for Life here: https://lnkd.in/eepW6Qay

It was really a pleasure diving into the details of Artemis Interreg Euro-MED, one of the thematic projects of the Interreg Euro-MED Natural Heritage, dealing with Posidonia meadows restoration. 🐟 The project plans to protect Posidonia seagrass meadows at 4 pilot sites across the MED and restore their vital ecosystems, combining technical innovations, such as transplantation, with financial schemes in the form of Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES). 🙏 A big "thank you" to all project partners that involved us in a two-day inspiring meeting, where I had the chance to learn more on the pilot cases, the ecosystem services to be studied (e.g., blue carbon and biodiversity) and the policy dimension of these activities. As projects' innovative results need to be sustained and properly capitalized in order to achieve real change, the results amplification strategy of the project was discussed and the potential synergies with the Interreg Euro-MED Natural Heritage were explored. The Natural Heritage Community supports the efforts of all thematic projects through a variety of activities and services, including community building, working groups, mentoring sessions, capacity building and policy advocacy. We are excited to announce that we are the knowledge partners for the MENA Oceans Summit, scheduled for June 10th in #Dubai. Under the patronage of the وزارة التغير المناخي والبيئة Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, the Summit brings together regional and global stakeholders to champion #ocean health and sustainable blue economy frameworks in the lead-up to United Nations Ocean Conference 2025. In the discussion around ocean conservation, the blue economy plays a central role in promoting sustainable growth and innovation. We must prioritize integrating advanced technologies and innovative practices to preserve and enhance our marine resources. This requires strong collaboration between the public and private sectors. By joining forces with our partners in the #MENA Oceans Summit, we aim to amplify the MENA region's voice in the global dialogue on ocean conservation, ensuring that our unique perspectives and challenges are addressed. Our goal is to drive solutions that have a significant impact locally and resonate globally, ensuring ocean conservation efforts focus on protection and pioneering new possibilities for the blue economy. 🌊 #RolandBerger Hani Tohme, Prof. Dr. Torsten Henzelmann, René Seyger, Mario Sanchez, Filippo Ghizzoni, Karim J-P Haggar, PhD

Happy 3rd Birthday to El Castillo 🥳 rrreefs built El Castillo in 2021 using 228 specially designed bricks off the coast of #SanAndresIsland, Colombia 🧱🏝️ We assembled our prototype in just 10 days, together with 11 workshop participants, the local NGO Corales de Paz - Buceo con Propósito and other stakeholders. In 2022, just six months after building, we conducted our first monitoring of the reef which showed promising signs that our structure was working, and marine life was making it their home. 2023 was a year of ups and downs for the reef. We followed the growth of the baby corals, and coral fragments. Witnessed great ecological cues, until November 2023. Like many other places in the world, Colombia was struck by the heat wave that caused many corals living there to die. This was devastating news. However, this was not the end for all the corals of El Castillo. After what happened in November 2023, we were curious to see how things would develop in San Andrés. And rest assured, we were not disappointed! In March of this year, we conducted some more monitoring dives and discovered an abundance of baby corals living inside El Castillo. Fish were still living there, and nature had taken over again. What a beautiful and emotional site to come back to! 😊🐠🐙🪸 Today we are not only celebrating 3 years of El Castillo but also nature’s resilience and strength to regenerate itself! #rrreefs #coralreef #coralreefrestoration #oceandecade #marineconservation #SDG14 #biodiversity #climateaction

Back to the International Conference in Paraguay in November 2023 organized by #ICMAH #ICTOP #INTERCOM and #MPR: Museum Leadership in Climate Action Second day, third session Eugenia Villarmarzo from #Uruguay, as keynote speaker, presented challenges of climate change for the conservation of landscapes and coastal archaeological sites. Landscapes are changing because of the global warming! There are 18 protected archaeological areas in Uruguay but many risks: erosion, shift of the coastline, sandstorm, increase in detectorists… She recalled part of the definition of heritage: preservation of the present for the future and a way to make minorities visible. Yes, it’s a challenge! And the transdisciplinarity is very important between geology, archaeological heritage and environmental education and between research, management and mediation. Nouran Khaled from #Egypt presented how preserving museum collections in the time of climate change through different examples. Given the increeasing occurrence of natural disasters and their impact on cultural heritage, monitoring, controlling and providing intervention solution (temperature, humidity, brightness…) are representing a reliable methodology to safeguarding cultural heritage from the effects of climate change and giving the historical museums a chance to protect the world’s treasures. Myriame Morel-Deledalle from #France shared reflexions about the impact of the climate change for future research and exhibitions. She started with a picture of greek vestige from 6th century BC under the snow in Marseille, a city in south of France: an incredible situation! After that, she focused her presentation on prehistorical caves situation like Altamira, Lascaux, Chauvet or Cosquer. For this last one, in a specific situation under the sea, a replica is now visitable and it seems to be a solution facing climate change. In fact she recalled that we need to be more respectful and modest and stop our investigations in heritage. There are so many already dicovered sites to protect before destructing new unknown ones. Marie Grasse from National sports Museum in #France explained how the International Olympic Committee (IOC) takes the bid of sobriety and eco-responsability for its 33rd Olympiad in Paris in 2024. For the first time, the Olympic Games will be aligned with the Paris Agreement: less than 55% greenhouse gas emissons, 100% renewable energy supply, 100% of sites accessible by public transport and bicycle… Cc ICOM France
