Friday is Wisdom Day. Today we want to share some information about the Olympic Games in Paris. ✨🏅   As part of its strategy, Paris wants to align itself with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement and reduce its CO2 emissions by half compared to the London 2012 Games. The remaining emissions will be offset. The organisers have decided on measures such as: - less construction (95% of Paris 2024's sports venues already exist or will be built temporarily) - the use of low carbon solutions within the venues - the use of renewable energy for all venues - sustainable catering plans   Where do you see potential to expand sustainability at such events?

Will #Paris2024 be the greenest Olympics in history? 🌍 Here's why? ⤵ ♻ Unlike past Olympics, Paris 2024 will build only two new venues. The new aquatic center will feature solar panels and recycled plastic seats. 🥗 Food offerings will double plant-based options and source 80% locally. Place de la Concorde will exclusively serve vegetarian food, a notable shift for French cuisine. 🚴♂️ Eco-friendly transport is a priority with a 60km cycling network linking venues and stadiums connected to the public electricity grid to avoid diesel generators. ✈️ Spectator travel remains a challenge, potentially accounting for 80% of emissions. However, France’s ban on short-haul flights where train alternatives exist is a step towards mitigation. 🌳 Paris 2024 funds various carbon avoidance and capture projects, including new forests in France and climate change mitigation efforts near the equator. As the world unites for the Paris Olympics 2024, let's celebrate a victory for our planet! 🌍🏅 Paris Olympics 2024 are the first Olympics that have set a carbon footprint budget. The goal is to 𝗵𝗮𝗹𝘃𝗲 the emissions of the Games compared with the average of London 2012 and Rio 2016. They aim for a carbon footprint of 1.58 million metric tons of CO2 equivalents, below the target of 1.75 million. A comprehensive carbon budget was established, covering all aspects of the event, including construction, energy, transport, catering and procurement. With that in mind, let's remember - we cannot reduce what we cannot measure. Paris will host the 'Greenest Olympics Ever', with 50% less emissions compared to Rio and London How? ♻️ Using venues that are already there. Saving tremendous emissions from construction compared to earlier editions. We'll see quite some interesting sustainable policies put into practice this summer by the International Olympic Committee – IOC and the Paris 24 organization: • Sustainable materials used in construction of the Olympic Village • Recycled plastics used for new stadium seats • Cleaning the river Seine (for €1,4 billion!) • No AC in the Olympic Village • 60% vegetarian options on the menu and 25% of food is sourced within 250km from Paris. However, the hosts have also stated the Games will have a 'net positive climate impact'. Which they will achieve by...... offsetting millions of emissions. Claiming it's direct positive impact upfront. Proper assessments, reporting, accountability and transparency seems to be severely lacking to be able to go anywhere near 'Positive Climate Impact'.
