The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy and the Industrial Development Corporation have set up a R400 million fund to support junior explorers in the search for critical minerals in South Africa. (https://lnkd.in/dxSf_iXR). In addition to the publication of some geophysical and soil geochem datasets at no cost by the Council for Geoscience (https://lnkd.in/dCNJGFyd), these are some good strides in getting exploration going in the country. #exploration #geoscience #criticalminerals

ECOMOF: ECOWAS Mines and Hydrocarbons Forum 2024 The ECOWAS Forum on Mines and Oil (ECOMOF 2024) takes place in Cotonou, Benin, from 22 to 24 February 2024. This regional forum aims to promote the mining and oil sectors to promote the economic and social development of ECOWAS member countries. The theme of this 4th edition is “Geoextractive resources and technologies: what strategies of mutualization for the creation of added value in West Africa”. It stresses the importance of making the mining and oil sectors economic pillars, developing policies that are attractive to investors and increasing the contribution of these sectors to government revenues. The panel “Local content policies and value creation in the geo-extractive sector” was moderated by Mr. Ibrahima WANE, Technical Secretary of the CNSCL in charge of Mines marking the remarkable participation of the Ministry of Mines and Geology of Senegal audit Forum. This session was an opportunity to analyze the links and externalities of local content policies in the geo-extractive sector in Africa. #CNSCL #mines #SENEGAL #CEDEAO #ecomof Ministere des Mines et de La Geologie du SENEGAL Chambre des Mines du Sénégal (CMDS)

Learn about the geological principles of uranium deposit formation during the SEG 2024 workshop Primary and Secondary Uranium Exploration on Sept 26. An Africa-centric approach will be provided, covering Namibia, Niger, and South Africa in particular, and will include examples from Botswana among others. This course will provide an overview of the global major uranium deposit-types, including primary (alaskite type) and secondary uranium deposits. Deposit geology, host rock genesis and characterization, mineralization models and controls, as well as the main methods of exploration will be discussed. The course will also include discussions on downhole logging methods and the economics and current trends of the uranium market. www.seg2024.org/workshops #SEG2024 #geologyworkshop #uraniumexploration #economicgeology

Well-said Taufeeq Dhansay! Understanding our landscape of critical mineral resources is definitely a step in the right direction towards developing a globally competitive critical minerals sector in SA - not just as a supplier of critical minerals but also to realize maximum value through its beneficiation.
Dr. Taufeeq Dhansay at the Council for Geoscience speaks to Newzroom Afrika. It relates to lithium exploration and other critical minerals in South Africa. #MI24 #InvestingSA #MiningIndaba2024 Investing in African Mining Indaba https://lnkd.in/dvn7F_vP

Nestled in the heart of Mauritania lies a geological marvel awaiting exploration: The Taoudeni Basin Despite being one of the least explored basins globally, with only a few 2D seismic lines and five wells, this vast Upper Precambrian and Paleozoic sedimentary basin holds immense potential for oil and gas discoveries. Two petroleum systems are present: 1-Paleozoic Petroleum System: Source rocks: Silurian and Devonian Reservoirs: Ordovician 2-Neoproterozoic Petroleum System: Source rocks: Infracambrian Reservoirs: Stromatolic fractured limestones The basin's captivating geological history traces back to the Infracambrian era, stretching into the Carboniferous period, shaped by the tectonic forces of the Pan-African orogeny. This extensive zone of intracratonic subsidence has remained largely untouched, presenting a unique opportunity for those willing to delve into its depths. Exploration in the Taoudeni Basin is characterized by two significant periods: In the early 1970s, Texaco and Agip led the pioneering exploration efforts, conducting 2D seismic surveys and drilling wells such as Abolag-1 and Ouasa-1. Notably, Abolag-1 showcased the basin's potential with a gas flow rate of 13,600 m³/d, confirming the presence of a viable petroleum system. Exploration activity resumed in 2004, attracting companies like Total, Repsol, Sipex, and SMHPM. This period saw a substantial expansion of 2D seismic coverage to 15,000 km and the drilling of wells such as Ta8-1, Ta7-1, and Ouguiya-1, which revealed gas shows, further highlighting the basin's promise.
