To ensure a secure #food supply for its population in 2035 while implementing the federal "Climate Strategy for Agriculture and Food," #Switzerland will need to enhance productivity and sustainability in food production. The domestic agricultural sector remains vital for future food security. New technologies and farming methods, such as precision farming and methane-reducing food additives for livestock, are crucial for boosting productivity and sustainability. Additionally, innovative concepts like "novel food" or sustainable fish farms designed as recirculating systems will contribute to Switzerland's future food supply. As imports will continue to play a key role, Swiss importers must strategically diversify their supply chains and improve tracking to avoid climate-related shortages. In our latest Strategy& blog article, Catarina Bjelkengren, Harald Dutzler, Maciej Przybysz, Oliver Kalsbach, Marc Läuchli and I seek to raise awareness and enable an informed public debate on key food security and sustainability challenges. The precarious state of seed scarcity poses a significant threat to global food security, especially against the backdrop of a growing population and shifting climate patterns. Persistent challenges such as disease, pests, and erratic weather patterns are exacerbated by climate change and have further strained the already delicate balance of seed production. Europe, with its pivotal role in seed production and innovation, stands at the forefront of addressing this challenge. As a region boasting advanced agricultural science and technology, Europe holds promise in finding solutions to mitigate the risks associated with seed shortages. Leveraging its expertise in innovation, research, and development, the continent has the potential to not only safeguard its own food security but also contribute to addressing global challenges in this domain. #FoodSecurity #Innovation #AgTech

🌍 World Food Day 2024: "Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future" 🌾 The right to life is the right to everything that sustains it. Good food should not be a privilege, all of life needs to be fed to live. All over the world, food supply chains are celebrated on this day and at FarmCI, we shine the beam right back at the source; agriculture. We believe that agriculture isn’t just the backbone of our nation—it’s the key to feeding the future. As we commemorate World Food Day, we reflect on the theme: “Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future.” This day reminds us that food is more than sustenance—it's a fundamental right that builds healthier lives and stronger communities. While celebrating World Milk Day and highlighting dairy's nutritional importance, it is crucial to critically assess the environmental impact of Nestlé's large-scale dairy operations. With 15 billion liters of milk produced annually, Nestlé's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are commendable but require transparent and verifiable metrics. The 25% reduction in dairy emissions since 2018 is notable, yet the total impact must be evaluated. Programs like "Nature por NINHO" and innovative on-farm tools are positive steps, but their long-term effectiveness and scalability remain critical. Efforts to reduce emissions through improved cow feed and manure management are vital but must be part of a broader sustainability strategy. In conclusion, Nestlé's initiatives are promising but need comprehensive, transparent, and measurable strategies to ensure genuine sustainability in the dairy industry.
Yesterday, we celebrated World Milk Day! With a picture of the main actors from a place I know well since childhood, I’d like to emphasize the vital role of dairy in delivering quality nutrition and share with you how we at Nestlé tackle dairy emissions. Dairy is an essential part of a balanced diet across the world and is used in our products. That’s why we’re putting effort into reducing greenhouse gas emissions from dairy farming. Emissions reductions in dairy ingredients have already contributed to 25% of all the reductions achieved by Nestlé since 2018. And we are scaling up: Through directly supporting farmers such as in Brazil with the “Nature por NINHO” program. Together with our suppliers, we are also supporting innovative on-farm tools that reduce greenhouse gases and plant native trees to sequester carbon and improve soil health. The Nestlé Institute of Agricultural Sciences is dedicated to finding scalable novel approaches to reduce emissions in areas like cow feed and manure management. 💰🌿 Farming families who grow their own crops and cook traditional recipes, such as chapatis and bean dishes, were the first to see the benefits of biofortified crops. Now, nutrient enriched grains are entering food systems. Stimulating increased production of nutrient enriched crops by generating demand from food processors has been a key component of the HarvestPlus delivery model. As a result of our partnerships with food business and processors across Asia and Africa, commercially available processed foods prepared from biofortified crops are increasing in retail outlets. 📗👉 To learn more, download the 2023 Annual Report. https://lnkd.in/eqyhJtVW #HPAR2023 #HarvestPlus #HiddenHunger #Biofortification #FoodSecurity #SustainableAgriculture HarvestPlus Solutions CGIAR International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada AGRA FAO USAID Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation The Rockefeller Foundation Asian Development Bank (ADB)
