#USA 🇺🇸 #Hollywood 🎬: Over the last 5+ years—pre-, during & now 🙏 post-pandemic—I’ve had the chance along with my Milken Institute colleagues to help use our platform to put the spotlight on the evolution and power of “creative economies” & #storytelling to not just drive job creation, but importantly to drive change. Check out a range of panels and conversations including with Kevin Kwan, Michelle Yeoh, Eric Nam, Daniel Dae Kim, Henry Golding, Janet Yang, John Penotti, Raline Shah, Daniel Wu, Dan Lin, Padma Lakshmi, Jon Chu, Bing Chen and others from our #MIGlobal Global Conference and #AsiaSummit and other in-person & virtual convenings by going to our www.MilkenInstitute.org website. Yet, from matters of representation before & behind the cameras to the role of media in driving stereotypes and ideally in helping to #StopAsianHate, there’s still much to be done. Lessons are learned and ignored, or simply not learned at all. Here, for example, is a #quote to take to heart as the films Barbie and Oppenheimer have brought people back to movie theaters worldwide this summer. “I feel like, just in general, this industry is taking the wrong lessons. For example, ‘#Barbie’ is this massive blockbuster, and the idea is: Make more #movies about toys! No. Make more movies by and about women!” ~Randall Park Indeed. That quote ht NextShark https://lnkd.in/gBfcnd45 comes from a recent #RollingStone magazine interview with #RandallPark. Read the full interview here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gwp_XPev And tune in for more from our upcoming Milken Institute Asia Summit, Sept 13-15, 2023 in Singapore. All of our Public sessions will be livestreamed and available also online for viewing at your convenience. #access #USA #Asia #AsiaMinute #diversity #inclusion #diversitymatters #representationmatters #bethechange • Milken Institute Asia Center • White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders • Asian American Journalists Association • Asian American Federation • The Asian American Foundation • The Very Asian Foundation • #AAPI

#Korea 🇰🇷 to the world: #Kpop #Kdrama #Kfilm #Kbeauty #Kcooking & more. It is time: get ready for #K-literature. ICYMI: The Nobel Prize in #Literature was just awarded to the South #Korean 🇰🇷 author, artist and poet Han Kang “for her intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas & exposes the fragility of human life.” Writing from Seoul, The Associated Press’s Tong-hyung Kim reports that South Koreans are (understandably) joyful after Han Kang was named as the 2024 #NobelPrize Literature laureate. 👉 https://lnkd.in/e5jqyVDY DYK: As of 2024, of the 121 Nobel Prize in #Literature laureates, only 18 are women. And of these, only one is an Asian woman: this year’s awardee—Han Kang (#한강). The first Asian recipient, Rabindranath Tagore, was awarded the Literature Prize in 1913. The other male Asian Nobel Prize in Literature laureates are: Yasunari Kawabata (1968); Kenzaburō Ōe (1994); Gao Xingjian (2000); V.S. Naipaul (2001); Orhan Pamuk (2006); Mo Yan (2012); and Kazuo Ishiguro (2017). For more about #HanKang, her life and work, read this 👉 https://lnkd.in/eiCMzZ-S And, learn more about past female Nobel Prize in Literature laureates here 👉bit.ly/3f9x3Nt, including about Pearl Buck, a white American woman born in West Virginia but raised in China, where her parents were missionaries. Buck was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature “for her rich and truly epic descriptions of peasant life in China and for her biographical masterpieces.” A 1937 film adaptation of her Pulitzer Prize-winning work, “The Good Earth,” (in)famously cast Luise Rainer—not Chinese American actress Anna Mae Wong—in the role of Chinese peasant O-Lan. Rainer would go on to win the Academy Award for best actress for her role in “yellow face.” Fast forward 86 years & we journey from Pearl Buck (the 1938 Nobel Prize in Literature laureate), to Han Kang (the 2024 #NobelPrize laureate, from Gwangju, South Korea). 👏 It’s a journey reflective too of our changed times & changing #Asia. #Asia 🌏: What a three weeks. Taking the weekend off and pondering the sea (OK, the Gulf of Siam) & a favorite quote or two to take to 💙 from Tunde Onakoya (#HappyBirthdayTunde!), founder of Chess in Slums Africa: “Just like a pawn in the game of chess can become a queen 👸🏾👑, every child has the potential to rise to greatness.” And “It is possible to do great things from a small place.” 👉 https://lnkd.in/eDnTYRun Indeed. Just wrapped: 1) our Milken Institute Asia Summit 2024 in #Singapore 🇸🇬; 2) the 9th annual meeting of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) held for the first time in #Uzbekistan 🇺🇿 in Central Asia; and 3) The Rockefeller Foundation’s 2nd #AsiaXchange, taking place in #Thailand 🇹🇭, after its earlier inaugural gathering in #India 🇮🇳. How cool to have been a part of all three, helping lead sessions on: 🏔️“#Everest & the #Himalaya: climbing, climate, conservation & community,” w/ mountaineers and advocates Jamling Tenzing & Peter Hillary; and “#SuperReturns: Investing in Children,” with UNICEF East Asia and Pacific ambassador & actor #Siwon Choi; philanthropist & entrepreneur Hannah Nguyen (#HannahOlala), and actor, model & Save the Children Philippines ambassador Liza Soberano; 🤝 “Best Practices in #Connectivity in #CentralAsia,” with Wang Zhongjing, CEO, Multilateral Cooperation Center for Development Finance (MCDF); May Ali Babiker, Regional Manager, Islamic Development Bank (IsDB); Konstantin Limitovskiy, #AIIB VP for Investment Clients Region 2 and Project & Corporate Finance; Sulton Rahimzoda, Chairman of the State Committee on Investments and State Property Management of #Tajikistan; Ruslan Tatikov, Deputy Minister of Finance of #Kyrgyzstan; and Jon Zaidi, PhD, Country Head for Uzbekistan at ACWA Power; and 🌳 “The Journey to #NetZero,” with Eric Arndt, Christine Schoppe & Natalye Paquin, COO, of the #RockefellerFoundation; Pai-Chi Li, president, Asian Institute of Technology; Soomi Ro, director of administration, United Nations Economic & Social Commission for Asia & the Pacific (#UNESCAP); Ben Cashore, National University of Singapore Professor & Director, Institute for Environment and Sustainability - Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. No doubt there are links 🔗 & more 📸 of the above online, but closing this post with another quote from AsiaXchange. This one from Kitty Bu of The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP): “Money & projects are not the problem. … It’s the people. It’s the #mindset. … It’s how we work together.” Here’s to #radicalcollaboration. Cheers! So, great to have seen old friends & new across Asia & Pacific including Beverley Postma & Andrew Cross, and many a former Asian Development Bank (ADB) colleague including Jeffrey Hiday, Kanokpan Lao-Araya, Eugenue Zhukov, Wencai Zhang & AIIB President Jin Liqun. #USA #Asia #AsiaMinute #MIGlobal 🌲 PS: a special shoutout to Deepali Khanna, the only other one I found on this particular 🇸🇬🇺🇿🇹🇭 trip w/ me!

#Singapore 🇸🇬: For a Milken Institute #MIGlobal Asia Summit 2024 panel curated with Amos Garcia ultimately entitled “Super Returns: Investing in Children as a Pathway to Global Progress,” I had at one point pondered instead calling the session, “Platforms for Good.” How can each of us in our own ways use our platforms, big or small, from books & essays to music & film to our #socialmedia posts & appearances as platforms for positive change, for positivity, and for good? In this case, our #MilkenInstitute panelists—Siwon Choi, Liza Soberano & Hannah Nguyen (Hannah Olala)—highlighted the impact, the opportunities and the challenges from rapidly evolving technology including social media, especially for & on young people. [WATCH 🔗: https://lnkd.in/eTdciiFe] "It is important for #children to grow up in a healthy mental state & be protected in a safe #digital environment. I will also do my best to help all children grow up in a positive environment & achieve their #dreams & grow into future leaders." ~#Siwon noted. A shared challenge for us all. 📸: via https://lnkd.in/eR_7tRFJ #USA #Asia #AsiaMinute #finance #health #philanthropy #GoGlobal | Milken Institute International | #mentalhealthmatters | UNICEF | UNICEF East Asia and Pacific | UNICEF USA
