The Western Australian #hydrogen industry is set to receive a substantial boost with the Albanese Government's A$70 million investment in the #H2Kwinana Hydrogen Hub, heralding a new phase in the state's clean energy development. The investment forms part of the broader Regional #HydrogenHubs program, a $526 million initiative designed to promote the development of hydrogen hubs in ports, cities or regional or remote areas, promoting efficiencies from economies of scale, fostering innovation and promoting cross-sector cooperation.  “Investing in an Australian hydrogen industry is investing in Australia’s future,” said Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen. “Kwinana has been an industrial and economic powerhouse for decades, making it an ideal location for a hydrogen hub that can support decarbonisation of heavy industry and connect our renewable resources to the world..." Namibia eyes being sustainable energy capital of Africa: Africa’s energy position is changing, and it is against this backdrop that as a country, Namibia is positioning itself as the sustainable energy capital of Africa. This was said by mines and energy minister Tom Alweendo in Dubai on Friday when he launched the inaugural Global African Hydrogen Summit (GAh2S) to be hosted in Windhoek on 3 to 5 September next year. The initiative was launched on 6 November as part of the joint COP28 programme for Namibia by the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB), the Environmental Investment Fund of Namibia (EIF), DMG Events and Vasco Da Gama Energy. Alweendo said the world is facing an unpre­cedented climate crisis and that the urgency to transition to clean and sustainable energy sources has never been more apparent. “This has become a global imperative that demands collaborative efforts and innovative solutions, and Namibia is poised to play a pivotal role in this global transition agenda,” he said. “This will not only be achieved through the sustainable beneficiation of our primary energy resources, but also through the development of green and blue economic growth and energies, investing in platforms that facilitate dialogue and partnership, skills and technology transfers, as well as trade between Africa and the rest of the world,” he said. According to a statement from the NIPDB, the three-day summit themed’From Ambition to Action: Fuelling Africa’s Green Industrial Revolution’, will bring together heads of state, government agencies, industry business leaders, project developers, investors, thought leaders and technologists from across Africa and around the globe to drive critical investment and financing into bankable green energy projects. As a dynamic and innovative investment platform, the Global African Hydrogen Summit will provide a variety of engagement opportunities, including an educative masterclass, high-level leadership dialogues, a strategic conference, project investment boardroom roundtables and a technology and innovation hub. Alweendo said the summit will be the first platform of its kind to be leveraged by African governments, investors, financiers, scholars and the public to unlock additional opportunities for the continent and its partners. “It will also provide a platform for the global players in the hydrogen value chain to showcase their projects, plans and technologies to the African continent,” said Alweendo. Australia's green energy innovators, critical minerals sector and hydrogen developers have emerged big winners in tonight's Federal Budget, unveiling a major investment in Australia's energy transition. $22.7bn is set aside for the Future Made in Australia program, $8bn for green hydrogen production credits and $7bn in new tax incentives for critical minerals. Another $1.7bn will fund a green energy innovation fund and there's an extra $1.5bn funding for the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA). In addition there is an estimated $65 to $80 billion of potential investment in "off-budget" spending, including the National Reconstruction and Rewiring Australia funds; and the Capacity Investment Scheme that will underwrite a 32GW expansion of renewables and dispatchables potentially valued at $65bn. The Holy Grail in this is the development of a green hydrogen and green steel industry. Australia has taken a step up by making $13bn available for strategic investment through production credits in hydrogen, a clean energy project vital to its trading relationships with Japan and other Asia Pacific trading partners. The headline grabber is the $300 power bill rebate to all Australian households -- costing around $3.5bn -- but it's overshadowed by the significant funding support for the energy transition. While this spending is big -- the energy transition was always going to be a costly business -- there will still be disappointment it does not go far enough and nowhere near the trillion dollar clean energy subsidies the US is offering. Latin America continuously shows great potential and this is no secret. Perhaps the most challenging part is to overcome the lack of infraestructures, policies and many more. Some will see it as difficult task to win, some others like me see the potential. Clearly there is a long road to accomplish a full transition, but definitely the region promises to bring hope to the global climate crisis we are facing. With one of the cleanest electrical sectors in the world presently, Latin America and the Caribbean present promising opportunities for the development of future clean energy enterprises. 60% of the region's electricity comes from renewable sources, mostly hydropower, which produces twice as much as the world average. Meanwhile, countries like Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Argentina are home to some of the world's top wind and solar resources. The region is a significant exporter of biofuels and has a high rate of bioenergy use. We have discovered a significant implementation gap for policies. 16 out of 33 nations in the region have presented more aggressive Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) linked to the 2015 Paris Agreement, with the majority pledging to achieve net zero emissions by the middle of the century or earlier. However, the region is expected to continue relying heavily on fossil fuels to cover a significant portion of its energy needs under the current policy settings, particularly for road transportation, while progress on renewable energy transitions is expected to remain slow. The analysis concludes that there needs to be a significant increase in investment in the area to consider reaching such NDC's. In order to meet commitments, funding for sustainable energy projects must increase fivefold by 2050 and quadruple to USD 150 billion by 2030. According to this scenario, by the 2030s, the investment in clean sources will have risen from about 1:1 to 4:1 in relation to unrestricted fossil fuel use. Of course, we are not the main actors of this transition, we both play an important role of this matter. At COP28, Ørsted announced that the EU-Catalyst Partnership, which consists of the European Commission, Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, and the European Investment Bank (EIB) Bank, has vowed to support Ørsted’s FlagshipONE project, Europe’s largest e-methanol plant for shipping. Breakthrough Energy Catalyst will acquire a 15 % equity interest in FlagshipONE and provide a grant to the project, subject to the fulfilment of funding conditions. FlagshipONE  is expected to produce up to 55,000 tonnes of e-methanol each year and is located on the grounds of the Swedish biomass-fired combined heat and power plant ‘Hörneborgsverket’ in Örnsköldsvik, operated by Övik Energi. The e-methanol from FlagshipONE will be produced using renewable energy, which is almost exclusively the electricity source in this part of Sweden, and biogenic carbon dioxide captured from Hörneborgsverket. In addition, FlagshipONE will use steam, process water, and cooling water from Hörneborgsverket, and excess heat from the e-methanol production process will be delivered back to Övik Energi and integrated into their district heating supply. https://lnkd.in/ebcbzMiF
