This ambition has seen considerably greater investment as OWS ramps up efforts to build a stronger local ecosystem of support. At the core of OWS’s mission is a commitment to harnessing the potential of Botswana’s tourism sector to benefit the broader community. This entails not only providing memorable experiences for visitors but also ensuring that local citizens are active participants and beneficiaries of the industry’s success. By amplifying the local value chain, OWS aims to create a ripple effect of positive socioeconomic impact across Botswana. Enhancing the local value chain involves a multifaceted approach that begins with fostering partnerships with local suppliers and businesses. OWS prioritises sourcing goods and services locally, from fresh produce to artisan crafts, thereby bolstering the livelihoods of local vendors and entrepreneurs. This includes products and services consumed or used within camps and lodges, and even in curio shops within camps or at the Maun operations base. As OWS gears up for its inaugural Supplier Expo in Maun on the 13th of March 2024, local businesses are encouraged to register to be able to show their products and services in a bid to meet the quality and service standards required and to ultimately enter the fold of contractors of OWS. The inaugural Supplier Expo will focus on ceramics (tableware and decorative), uniforms, linen, towels, engine lubricants, curios, amenities, food and beverage (including agricultural supplies), tyres, bulbs, toilet paper, service for consolidation (to identify more services needed and bring together smaller suppliers), and cleaning materials. An opportunity to grow and scale their businesses, vendors who progress to consideration and contracting will also be provided with support in the form of training and workshops facilitated by OWS. What will transform hospitality and tourism in Africa? Serious sustainability reporting. Not the boring reports no one reads, but actual targets and commitments from organizations. Examples include initiatives that enhance operations, staff wellbeing, and support local industries like food and beverage, design, and manufacturing. Sustainability goes beyond towel reuse. Provides folks with self catering holidays in a natural forested environment so that they can recharge. Tourism | Property | Subsea
#Tourism and #Sustainability is tricky. Travel / transport is usually a prerequisite of taking a holiday break. Travel / transport is, of course, one of the biggest carbon emission contributors. Moreover, we are unlikely to stop doing it as we are unlikely to stop taking breaks away from home. Some pledge to stop or at least limit air travel in their quest to limit their carbon footprint. They make go on to take breaks closer to home. Travel / transport still however is still a part of the “get away.” Notable also is that when folks are on holiday they are at the very best / worst for consumerism. This is because they seek to maximise their experiences and enjoyment whilst away. In turn, this is another source of emissions beyond their normal order of things. In my observation some of the highest consumerism behaviours are exhibited by young folk. They are are only trying to live life to the full and enjoy themselves. It seems perhaps that when away from home the strong green and sustainable values that they might promote go out the window, so to speak. These are some of the contentious issues that confront tourism and will undoubtably be subjects of debate on Earth day at the ASSC tourism conference in Perth. Come and contribute to the debate. It is a tricky one. #cairngormlodgesandbothies #sustainabletourism #regenerativetourism #redsquirrel #scotent #aileenlamb #janienewmann #ASSC #selfcatering

🌍 Visit Tallinn Sets a New Standard in Sustainable Event Hosting 🌿 In an inspiring showcase of commitment to sustainability, Visit Tallinn took a monumental step forward by hosting the Green Destinations annual conference in 2023. This prestigious event attracted 250 delegates from across the globe, all sharing a passion for sustainable travel and destination management. Our partnership with Visit Tallinn for this event was a journey of innovation and environmental stewardship. ClimateScore conducted a comprehensive data collection process, designed to be seamless and require minimal effort from the meeting planner. The highlight of the conference was the live presentation of the event's carbon footprint results to the 250 delegates, showcasing an exceptionally low carbon footprint. The event was awarded an outstanding Climate Score rating of 9.5 out of 10, establishing a new benchmark for sustainability in event hosting. This achievement resulted in a significant reduction of 4,400 tons of CO2, equivalent to a car traveling 13,050 kilometers (approximately the round trip from Tallinn to Barcelona twice). The impact of this achievement left delegates inspired to integrate similar climate-conscious decisions into their own practices and communities. "Visit Tallinn partnered with ClimateScore at the Green Destinations conference. This translated into a significant 4,400-ton CO2 reduction. The live results revealed an exceptionally low carbon footprint, earning us a best-in-class rating of 9.5 out of 10 and inspired delegates to make climate-conscious choices. We are so excited to launch SHARE PROJECT, designed to showcase the great work and innovations of our members as part of the GSN Planet community. In this edition, my favorite take away is this: "It's about consciously reducing things to the essentials," says Klaus. Sometimes, it is precisely what is NOT there that characterizes a house. Sometimes, it is precisely what is 'missing' that offers space for a completely new experience. For instance, where guided excursions and hikes are not offered, people are once again encouraged to plan tours with a hiking map and set off on an exploration. After all, the experiences you have yourself are the ones that stay with you." The SHARE PROJECT is about just that, sharing real-life strategies and tactics for expanding sustainability practices that anyone can adopt along our collective journeys from a light, spring green business to a deep, forest green fully integrated planetary inhabitant. #ShareProject #Sustainability #SustainabilityLeadership #Spa #SpaManagement #HotelManagement #Hoteliers #WellnessJourney
