Heads up on this exciting event at BIOFACH. As part of the Sustainable Future Labs, this event on “Organic Contemporary: Regenerative and distributive” sets the spotlight on keeping our organic farmers, market and movement at the forefront of circular, regenerative, equitable and FAIR development in food systems. All over the world I hear the same question: When organic farming provides so many proven contributions to climate resilience, biodiversity, health, farm incomes and food security (and taste).....why have we not fully mainstreamed everywhere? Why do "regenerative" and "plantbased" gain such traction. Are we just not communicating well? Not aspirational enough? Not collaborating enough? Have we lost our mojo? And what can accelerate organics? What do you think? What should the organic movement and market actors be focussing on? We will look at the challenges and examples of how organics are both pioneers in growing trends, but also how new trends “compete” for the sustainability focus in markets, policy and research. And of course we will share what pathways we see into a strong organic future. Examples of how are we already mobilizing, collaborating and building on our strengths, partnering to combine organics with circular production, regenerative, plantbased…and the movement for equity and justice in world food systems. Biofach is the World´s Leading Trade Fair for Organic Food. It is held annually in the picturesque town of Nuremberg, Germany. More and more consumers are looking for sustainable options. Consumers’ expectations are steadily rising, particularly in Germany. Mills Farm believe in the importance of regenerative bee keeping and bee venom extraction practices. “The future of the (organic) market lies in regenerative growth.” explains retail futurologist Theresa Schleicher in her Study of the Retail Future 2024.* At Mills Farm we ensure to keep the environmental impact of our operations as low as possible, but we also generate positive effects. For example, we ensure that no bees are harmed during the bee venom extraction process. This safeguards their life cycle. What’s needed is to handle resources and materials in New Zealand properly, and to produce in a way that future generations are also benefitting from those practices. Their initial focus was on cell-cultured milk, which involves growing lactating mammary cells in bioreactors. However, they have since shifted their strategy to leverage their proprietary cellular technology to create highly functional components naturally found in milk. 🥛TurtleTree plans to launch its first products in the US soon using its cell-based dairy ingredients through multiple B2B partnerships. They expect to fully commercialize their cultured milk within the next four to five years. Congratulations to the business and academic collaborators awarded Business Innovation Vouchers by Growing Kent & Medway to advance sustainable innovation in our food systems! 🌱 5 of the 13 funded projects will draw on the expertise of academics in the School of Biosciences and School of Chemistry and Forensic Science at the University of Kent: 👉 Professor Tobias von der Haar will be working with Nutri-San to develop a yeast strain which can break down and destroy the plastic used in the seaweed cultivation process. 👉 Dr Robert Barker is helping the UK Carbon Code of Conduct understand the impact of different sizes, types and application rates of small rock particles (known as fines, a waste product from quarrying) on carbon capture and soil health. 👉 Dr Anastasios Tsaousis is using cutting-edge genetic sequencing techniques to help Inspro understand how different diets and environments influence the gut microbiome of black soldier fly larvae and how the natural fertiliser they produce can improve the nutrient availability and microbial diversity in soil. 👉 Dr Helen Cockerton will analyse the chemical profiles of hops to support Wantsum Brewery  to develop a new, sustainable, non-alcoholic beer using UK-grown hops. 👉 Dr Cockerton will also be working closely with Ramsgate Brewery Limited (Gadds’) and a Kent-based hop breeder to delve into the unique aroma, flavour and chemical composition of UK hops to help breweries select and use the right hops for their needs. The “Seeding Grains of Care” campaign by CERELAC, which won the Nestlé Global Innovation Award 2024 in the "Good for the Planet" category, is a notable step towards sustainability. However, several critical issues require attention. While the campaign promotes regenerative agriculture, its reliance on precision agriculture technology may not be accessible to all farmers, especially small-scale ones. Additionally, the focus on Alentejo, Portugal, raises questions about scalability and the broader applicability of these practices. The campaign’s impact on local ecosystems and biodiversity must be carefully monitored to avoid unintended negative consequences. Moreover, the socio-economic challenges for farmers, who need ongoing support and education to adopt sustainable practices, are not fully addressed. From a consumer perspective, there is skepticism about Nestlé’s overall commitment to sustainability, given its history of controversial practices. Consumers must critically evaluate whether CERELAC's campaign is a genuine shift or a marketing strategy. Additionally, premium pricing for sustainable products could limit access for lower-income families, contradicting the campaign’s goals. In conclusion, while CERELAC's initiative is promising, it must address these critical issues comprehensively to be truly effective and credible in promoting sustainable agriculture.
