One of the most interesting things I've found during this election cycle on the road to the EU elections in France has been the spillover of national debates into the space. We find a Bardella (Le Pen camp) and Hayer (Macron camp) match up once more. But with current polls indicating 31% of 18–24-year-olds voting for the far-right and only 4% voting for the presidential camp, there are clearly lessons to be drawn on the road to the Presidential elections in 2027. The EU election results will be important for France to take seriously moving forward.

10 June 2024 EUROPEAN ELECTIONS Don’t be taken away by the French baiser sur la joue! The European elections caused a political earthquake in France and led to a predictable shift to the Right in the European Parliament. The pivotal party became the People’s Party (it was Renew Europe), marking a significant change in the political landscape. However, the anticipated wave towards the Far Right did not materialise. Top EU positions can easily find the necessary support of the existing four-party alliance. Ursula von der Leyen is closer to being confirmed for a second term as President of the Commission. Broadening the current alliance to the ECR or just Meloni’s Brothers of Italy looks tricky, although not impossible. Despite today’s hit on European assets, market worries are excessive. Over time, the focus will move to the possible shift in policy priorities. (check with me for full commentary; institutional investors only) #europeanelections #EUpolicies #EUpolitics

Short comments on the French elections. - one of the main result is that parties will have to make coalitions and compromises in an institutional system and decades of practice that were designed to avoid exactly that. - The far-right RN is the main party in the National Assembly, doubling its number of MPs. They are far from the absolute majority they may have commended and that scared many a week ago, but it is objectively a progress. - The left-wing coalition is rebalanced in a way: the leftist LFI is no longer a very dominating group since the socdem PS will have almost the same number of MPs as LFI. But there are still wild divergences in priorities and objectives, most importantly on international issues. - Macron’s party campaigned on demonizing the left bloc (reducing it to LFI) but still came behind them. Finding compromises will not be easy. - Overall, while Macron claimed he wanted to bring “clarity” when calling for a snap election, he just made France more difficult to rule. While in the short term the far right is not in power, Paris will clearly be more inward focused in the next few years.

🗳 The European Parliament’s Spring 2024 Eurobarometer survey reveals significant findings before the European elections. It indicates a significant rise in citizen interest in the 2024 European elections and a generally positive attitude towards the EU. ❗ Defence and security are highlighted as key issues, as they are mentioned first as important EU policies in nine countries. Yet, citizens also think that the European Parliament should defend values such as peace and democracy. 🕊️ Challenges such as populism, disinformation, and a potential shift in budget priorities toward defence remain. The rise of social media and online news consumption also poses a risk of disinformation, potentially influencing public opinion on EU investment priorities. EAVI hopes that citizens will keep advocating for EU values such as peace and democracy. For more information, you can read the new article on EAVI’s website: https://lnkd.in/emFyDGVb

if the average European voter is moving towards the centre-right, it's only natural that EU policies do too. but the challenges we face as Europeans - cost of living, security, climate- cannot be solved only with right-wing, liberal or left-wing politics alone. this is why the EU, as the phenomenal consensus-building machine that it is, will rise above changes in the national political mood and deliver on what's best for Europeans as a whole. let's keep reforming the EU so that it makes decisions faster and more resolutely. these are some of the messages I shared at this online session with EU Issue Tracker. I can only recommend hearing Camilla Palla's more specific take on how to prepare, as a public affairs professional, to the new political cycle. thanks Geraint Edwards and FiscalNote for the invitation.
