On June 28, 2024, Federal Court Judge Jesus Bernal issued a historic permanent injunction in C.B. v. Moreno Valley Unified School District et al., in which he ordered Defendant Moreno Valley Unified School District (MVUSD) to make extensive district-wide changes, as well as reduce its reliance on school police and security officers to respond to students with disabilities. The ruling marks a significant victory in protecting the rights of students with disabilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. The order requires MVUSD to significantly reduce the disproportionate referral, removal, and restraint of disabled and Black disabled students from classrooms by reforming school district policies, implementing comprehensive training for school-based staff, and collecting and monitoring data. I've come across a video from a Warwickshire County Council meeting and actually cannot believe what I've seen. In discussion about SEND Education phrases such as: "Is it something in the water?" "Why are there so many people jumping out with these needs" and most appallingly "They must have had better ways of dealing with them- let's go back to some of those ways" when talking about institutions! Have these councillors forgotten that people with additional needs were abused in the worst possible ways, locked up and chained to radiators when held in institutions? What does Ofsted think of this being suggested as practice for care of vulnerable children and young people? These people should have absolutely nothing to do with decisions relating to the care and support of some of the most vulnerable people in society, nor should they be trusted in public office. People aren't just "jumping out", they've always been here but have been persistently failed and/or abused. Equally, we don't "deal" with them, we support them showing care and compassion to help them achieve their full potential. These attitudes are the very reason people with additional needs and disabilities are consistently failed and cannot meet their full potential. These type of people are the very reason I am studying to become a Learning Disabilities Nurse to make this world a fairer place. For reference: the video can be found here: https://lnkd.in/e4DeJK4a

On this day in 1975, Public Law 94-142 which served as the basis for the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA), was signed into law. IDEA has changed the lives of children with disabilities. 🤔 This law makes free appropriate public education available to eligible children with disabilities. 🎒 As of school year 2020-21, more than 7.5 million youth need special education services. 🚫 Without IDEA, there would be many children who would not receive the special education and related services that they need. 💪 The signing of this law means we are able to help provide the support and individualized services that children need to benefit from public education. "Did you know that the Department of Education (ED) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) enforce important federal civil rights laws? These laws are designed to protect individuals from discrimination based on various protected classes. If you're wondering which laws we're talking about, here they are: 🔹 Title IV and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 🔹 Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 🔹 Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 🔹 Titles II and III of the Americans with Disabilities Act 🔹 Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) When it comes to schools, it's crucial for them to respond appropriately to harassment targeting students based on a protected class. Failing to do so might mean that the school is violating one or more of these civil rights laws. Let's work together to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for everyone! ✨ Find more information like this on our web: 👉🏻 saynobullying.org #CivilRights #EducationMatters #InclusionForAll #EqualOpportunity "
