From a pool of international applicants, our jury of local business experts has handpicked five promising GreenTech scaleups for our 2024 batch. 💫 These dynamic companies are united in their potential to enrich Hamburg as a hub for cutting-edge technology and provide local enterprises with innovative solutions to sustainability challenges. 🌳 Over the next few months, these five scaleups will receive personalised support to successfully establish their businesses in Germany. At the core of our offering is a comprehensive matchmaking programme that connects these young companies with Hamburg-based corporations. 🤝 Our goal? To facilitate joint innovation projects that bring novel solutions into local applications, fostering a greener, more sustainable future for the City of Hamburg. Reflecting on the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) meeting in Brussels this week (and the tiring, 90 minute delay on the Eurostar coming home, ggrrrr 😞) I was impressed by two things: firstly, the number of potential investors in the room. There were at least 20 representatives of venture capital and seed funders all looking at a broad spectrum of innovation, including ours. CO2Bioclean was approached by several potentially interested investors for our 2025 capital raising round. Secondly, I was highly impressed by some of the pitches. There are some amazing start ups. Naturally CO2Bioclean is the best 😁 but perhaps we're biased. Seriously though, seeing some of the new inventions and technologies entering the market is really encouraging because it makes the dream of a cleaner, more liveable world seem less of a fantasy. From eliminating microplastics to quantum computing in AI there were so many to choose from. Being an investor is not easy- which ones actually have a plan to come to market and expand into viable businesses ? That the EIC has already funded all those who pitched this week is an indication at the very least, that these companies are considered potential growth industries. Exciting for the founders, investors and above all, for us, humanity. Well done Fabiana Fantinel for your strength and stamina in an exhausting schedule.

The EIC Scaling Club has welcomed its first 48 deep tech scale-ups into the fold. Those companies are part of one of four pre-defined market sector groups, with a dozen companies per group. Each group represents a high-potential area where Europe and its bright minds can not only contribute but lead globally. The selected companies are poised to drive innovation in these sectors, as well as contribute to achieving the EU's energy, security, and technological ambitions. In fact, they're well on their way. Here's how much the scale-ups in each sector have already raised prior to joining the Club: ➡ Digital Security & Trust -> €202.64M ➡ Next-Gen Computing -> €341.47M ➡ Renewable Energies -> €341.9M ➡ Smart Mobility -> €482.45M More than just a category, each market group is a nexus of companies, mentors, stakeholders, investors, and peers all connected through EIC Scaling Club with the goal of helping at least 20% of the scale-ups to reach 'unicorn' status. Recently, PortXL participated in the Maritime Innovation Dinner – and so did two members of our supervisory board: Femke Brenninkmeijer, who opened the dinner together with Peter Goedvolk, and Vivienne de Leeuw, who gave a keynote speech on transitions and entrepreneurship in the port region. Innovation is, of course, an ongoing topic and one that is near to our hearts, as we aim to bring as many maritime start-ups and scale-ups into the ecosystem to further both (product) innovations and the method of open innovation. The event, attended by Christel Pullens and Linda Treuman, was also useful to catch up with some of our partners, such as Damen, City of Rotterdam (Hanneke Bruinsma) and Port of Rotterdam. A good moment to talk about challenges – more specifically, challenges for which a collaboration with relevant start-ups and scale-ups can be part of the solution.   Indeed, every year our partners come up with challenges. These topics give us guidance when scouting for participants (worldwide) who will make up the new 2024 cohort of our accelerator programme, making it directly relevant for maritime companies looking towards innovation as a way of tackling challenges.    Thanks to Maritime Delta and the Rotterdam Maritime Board for organising this event at the premises of Royal Roos BV en VSTEP Simulation, where Dirk Koppenol led a panel discussion with Josefien Groot, Karin Govaert, and Marco Hoogendoorn about ‘mature markets with immature innovations’.    Tip: reach out and connect with these interesting people! We recently gathered at the DeepTech Alliance Clean Energy Summit in Barcelona to discuss how radical innovations can drive the future of clean energy. Enrico Deluchi, Chairman of DeepTech Alliance, reflected on the forming of the Alliance and the importance of international collaboration in transforming global challenges into growth opportunities.   🔹 The Vision: Radical innovations and international collaboration is badly needed to tackle global challenges such as carbon emissions reduction and supply chain transformations. For this reason DTU Science Park and The Danish Industry Foundation initiated DeepTech Alliance in 2018 to join forces with other startup ecosystem hubs across Europe to connect the most promising European Deep Tech startups with business partners needed to get their solutions to market and scale internationally 🔹 Achievements: Since 2021, we have assessed over 6,500 ventures, conducted six Business Creation Programs, and identified 220+ business opportunities. Our efforts have enabled successful collaborations like TechEnergy Ventures' investment in Luminescent and Bosch's partnership with IPercept. 🔹 The Challenge: Despite Europe's world-class scientific research, much of our intellectual property remains commercially inactive.
