Earlier today, I had the pleaure of meeting with a delegation from the IFC Green Buildings Program: Michelle M. Farrell and Temilola Sonola. I told them we appreciate the good work that EDGE is doing in making it easy to design and certify resource efficient and zero Carbon buildings across the world. This is because it is in line with the Ministry’s commitment to adopting practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to build climate smart and sustainable communities and cities. We look forward to more engagements and a collaboration that will help the Ministry of Housing & Urban Development to leverage on the expertise of the IFC EDGE Green Buildings Program to drive the adoption of sustainable green building practices across the country. As a Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, we know that we have a responsibility to do our part in mitigating the negative impact of buildings and construction work on the environment. This is crucial as the sector is responsible for about 28 percent of greenhouse gas emissions and accounts for 35 percent of energy use; 60 percent of the electricity for heating, cooling, and lighting; as well as 25 percent of global water and 40 percent of materials extracted.

The future of sustainable building is here! CIBSE and eight other leading industry organisations have established the UK's first comprehensive Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard. This initiative will provide clear guidelines for developers, architects and engineers to create buildings that align with the UK’s climate goals. Together, we are defining what it means to be truly net zero. Read about our role in this pioneering endeavour. Leading the Way in Applied Science: Bridging EcoChemical Innovation with Circular Economy for Sustainable Development in Construction, Chemicals & Waste, Water, Aquaculture, and Agriculture across Sub-Saharan Africa.
The industry transition team is growing! It takes a multidisciplinary village to examine all aspects of the sustainable built environment: Finance & Economics Urban Planning Design Engineering BQ Specifications IT/ICT/Digital Technologies Chemistry/Physics/Biology Health Social Inclusion/ESG Legal Contracts Creatives Operations Research Project Management Current construction practices have been used for hundreds of years. We need to shift while learning which is not an easy task. We also need to plan in ways that reduce current problems and prevent future disasters. Decarbonisation is not about shutting down current businesses. Decarbonisation is about redesigning our approach to construction so that we have better health and environmental outcomes. Most of all, Decarbonisation is about improving our business models to make more (long term) money, i.e. find ways to have a steady profit 20 years in the future. What is a carbon and how do you get rid of it? Think about the factory smoke: what if instead of letting it escape into the air and everyone coughing, we can use filters that grab that smoke? what if we take the dirty filters and recapture some key ingredients to use again? what if you can make more construction products with lower electric bills? what if you can use 50% less water? what if transport time to the construction site is only 10 minutes? Cement and Steel have the most smokey processes. Our goal is to keep these materials in production while getting rid of the smokey production problems. The Climate Smart Buildings Alliance (CSBA), a joint project between EllisDon, RBC, and Mattamy Homes, is launching the Responsible Buildings Pact, a cross-industry agreement aimed at increasing the use of low carbon materials in the built environment 🙌 This initiative was unveiled this afternoon at the CAGBC | Canada Green Building Council’s Building Lasting Change conference in Toronto, with over 20 companies committing to the Pact. “Recognizing the business realities everyone faces, the Pact is designed to ensure we are all doing our best to reduce the climate impacts of our industry, and to create more transparency and shared accountability across the value chain.” - David Messer, Director of Climate Smart Buildings Alliance. The Responsible Buildings Pact is an open, voluntary, industry-wide agreement for developers, consultants, contractors, and supporters interested in working together to reduce the embodied carbon of the buildings we create. Companies joining the Pact will commit to remaining educated on lower carbon materials, establishing a process to consistently evaluate whether lower carbon materials or design strategies can be used, and publicly reporting the results of their process and evaluations on an annual basis. For more information on the Responsible Buildings Pact please visit: https://lnkd.in/gNgDpSxH #ResponsibleBuildingsPact #ClimateSmartBuildings #BuildingForBetter #CSBA
