OX2 has entered into a deal with energy firm Flower to offload its 42-megawatt Bredhälla energy storage facility situated in Sweden. Construction of the facility, located in the Uppvidinge municipality in Southern Sweden, commenced towards the end of 2022. The setup comprises lithium-ion batteries housed in 20 containers, boasting a collective capacity of 42.5 megawatts/42.5 megawatt-hours. The primary function of Bredhälla will be to furnish ancillary services to Svenska Kraftnät, the Swedish entity overseeing the transmission system, thereby ensuring grid stability. Moreover, it will participate in wholesale markets by engaging in energy arbitrage. Completion of the transaction is contingent upon approval from Swedish authorities and Svenska Kraftnät, with the expected closure slated for the second quarter of 2024. Upon activation, OX2 will undertake the technical and commercial management of the facility for a ten-year period. Batteries are quickly maturing in our electricity market. It seems remarkable, given that it is less than seven years since the world’s first really big battery – the so-called Tesla big battery at Hornsdale – was built, that the capacity of battery storage around the world is expected to soon overtake that of the much more established pumped hydro technology. The milestone – which is expected to occur in 2025 – is notable because it shows the battery storage technology, which is often derided as an immature technology, is anything but, and is showing exponential growth. “BESS (battery energy storage systems) is now arguably just as mature and bankable asset class as PHES (pumped hydro), which has long been considered an energy storage gold standard of maturity.” https://lnkd.in/gm2-abB6

The market has shifted. Batteries are now dominant. Battery storage is now confirmed as the dominant player in the provision of key services to the grid, as batteries and demand management nudge out fossil fuel generators from one of the more lucrative sections of the electricity market. The lates Quarterly Energy Dynamics report from the Australian Energy Market Operator reveals that batteries took a 50 per cent share in the frequency and ancillary services (FCAS) market in the December quarter, up from 38 per cent a year earlier and zero before the first big battery at Hornsdale was connected in late 2017. Part of the reason is the speed and versatility of battery storage, and the latest boost also comes from the creation of a new market – the vary fast FCAS Service that was introduced last year, where batteries, demand management and virtual power plants (linked smaller batteries) are the only technologies quick and smart enough to respond competitively. https://lnkd.in/gSX9MeAT
