I would add 10 years of blind spots and blinkers when it comes to the fashion industry ignoring the significant supply chain problems associated with the legal trade in endangered and exotic species: https://lnkd.in/gCxEAzq This failure of supply chain management is enabling industrial scale wildlife crime. In correspondence with Eva Kruse, when she was CEO of GFA (Global Fashion Agenda), she said “The legal trade in endangered species is a critical issue and not one we have engaged with in depth before here at Global Fashion Agenda. With regards to biodiversity as a topic, we find that our community of brands and retailers generally hold a low level of knowledge in this area.” What makes this astonishing is that a 2016 European Parliament Report said “The wildlife trade is one of the most lucrative trades in the world. The legal trade into the EU alone is worth €100 billion annually.” Much of this value and profit is for the benefit of the fashion and luxury sectors. Any of the stakeholders – business, industry groups, investors, government, IGOs or conservation NGOs – who want the sustainable use model to remain must commit to validating it. Radical transparency is the first step, until trade is transparent there is no proof of sustainability; it remains an ideology based on magical thinking. It is long overdue to see something like this on the GFA, though I acknowledge Copenhagen Fashion Week recently announced that it will ban exotic skins and feathers from its catwalks. As Target 5 of the CBD calls for all trade to be legal, sustainable and safe by 2030, until there is a significant investment in supply chain transparency, from the 'raw materials' end to the retail end, maybe it is time to call for No Transparency, No Trade: https://lnkd.in/g52eNDeJ From Livia Giuggioli Firth's post: 10 years of the same 10 years of speeches, commitments, promises, fancy presentations, and hashtag #greenwashing

10 years ago at the Copenhagen Fashion Summit - which has now been rebranded in a presumption way as The Global Fashion Agenda (would be curious to know how many people from the Global South have been invited to speak there) Global Fashion Agenda 10 years of the same 10 years of speeches, commitments, promises, fancy presentations, and #greenwashing This year the theme is “Unlocking the Next Level” 😂 which sounds about appropriate It says “this year it will take stock of the evolution of the sector (love it 😂) and the progress made so far (fantastic ) but most importantly look ahead at what actions must urgently be implemented in the near term to accelerate industry transformation” I am lying on the floor sobbing …

An idea I had for changing the fashion/clothing industry from the current wasteful fast-fashion model to a circular sustainable one. To make you a little curious, this business model could potentially make it so you never have to pack/take a suitcase for a vacation again. One of many ideas I've had since I started taking MIT Sustainability courses. #makefashioncircular #curcularbusinessmodels #MITProfessionalEducation #fashion #fastfashion #circulareconomy #sustainability #sustainableclothing #clothingindustry

In our previous post, Sowmy VJ talked about how to uphold truth in fashion industry's sustainable transformation. This can't be achieved by fashion brands alone, so here we discuss how policymakers can provide the right incentives for sustainable transformation while holding the line that transparency and accountability are invaluable allies in this pursuit.
