Ocean Encounters: Seabirds - Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution via YouTube : Surviving life on the open ocean Seabirds are uniquely adapted to life at sea—and uniquely vulnerable to its perils. Many spend the majority of their decades-long lives far from shore, flying thousands of miles over open water to find food, returning to land only to mate and raise their young. Join us as we learn about these extraordinary animals and talk with scientists working to understand and protect them. https://lnkd.in/enH92U-i

Exciting news for whales! The U.S. Coast Guard's Seattle base is taking an innovative step to protect whales and improve marine safety by integrating whale tracking into their operations, thanks to funding from the FY2022 bill. The Coast Guard has established a new "cetacean desk" at Sector Puget Sound's Vessel Traffic System operations centre that will collect and distribute real-time reports of whale movements. This data will help ships avoid collisions with these magnificent creatures, benefiting marine traffic and whale conservation efforts. Lt. Cmdr. Margaret Woodbridge, the program manager, highlights the significance of this data in informing ships about whale presence, which will improve maritime safety and scientific research on whales in the region. This initiative is a significant victory for the Quiet Sound program led by Washington Maritime Blue, which aims to reduce ship impacts on the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales. Stakeholders actively seek coexistence between ships and marine life in the Salish Sea by promoting vessel noise reduction and implementing voluntary slowdown initiatives during critical migration periods. You can read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/e9pX3rwu The OCEAN Project is happy to see yet another example of how a local community strives to protect whales from ship strikes. The OCEAN Project is committed to providing ships with the very best information about whales so that the professionals onboard can take evasive action. For more information on how the OCEAN project is approaching this issue, visit https://lnkd.in/eQKfRg7f Let's applaud this collaborative effort towards safer seas and preserving our precious marine ecosystems! #MarineSafety #Whales #Navigation

Highlighting FOCCUS: Collaborative Innovation for Enhanced #CoastalData at the #CopernicusMarine General Assembly 2024 The valuable contribution of the FOCCUS project is recognized during the Copernicus Marine General Assembly 2024. This project focuses on improving our understanding of coastal dynamics through innovative data collection and collaboration methodologies. FOCCUS brings together a consortium of expertise to enhance coastal data and improve flow understanding. By analyzing coastal data, FOCCUS aims to better understand complex flow dynamics within coastal zones. This knowledge is critical for addressing coastal management challenges, such as erosion and pollution. #CopernicusMarineGA #FOCCUS #MarineData #CoastalZones JERICO-RI European Infrastructure Copernicus Marine Service Mercator Ocean International EuroGOOS, European Global Ocean Observing System

It’s National Marine Week in the UK! From July 27th to August 11th (so more like a fortnight, really!), let's celebrate the incredible marine life that surrounds our beautiful shores! Our oceans are more than just a pretty view — they house over 30,000 species, help manage floods, purify water, and produce oxygen for every second breath we take. But our seas need protecting, and that’s where innovation comes in. CSignum’s EM-2 signalling technology offers a ground-breaking way to monitor and protect our marine environments. By enabling wireless data collection from underwater, surface and airborne vehicles, CSignum can transform how we observe and safeguard our oceans. Imagine the impact on ocean conservation and infrastructure monitoring! Let’s embrace technology to ensure our marine life thrives for generations to come. Discover all about National Marine Week and its history. https://lnkd.in/d3SErBw #NationalMarineWeek #MarineConservation #OceanTech #ProtectOurSeas

After reviewing the video and comments, it's clear that while failing to maintain a proper lookout (Video 2:30 minutes remaining) was crucial, it was not the only issue. The safety findings highlight that if assessment standards are not applied consistently, outcomes become unreliable. Several safety issues in the report were not addressed: 1. Obsolete GPS: The outdated GPS was never replaced, indicating ineffective maintenance of critical equipment. This was not mentioned as a safety finding. 2. Bridge Layout: The second ECDIS station, located behind a curtain, hindered lookout and bridge resource management (BRM) by obscuring instrument readouts, violating MSC/Circ.982 from 2000. 3. SOLAS Chapter V Reg 15: There is no mention of how the bridge layout failed to facilitate the pilot and bridge team in making a full appraisal of the situation and accessing essential information. 4. VTS Tracking Failure: The VTS tracking failure was noted (page 37) but not addressed, as a single point failure as a safety issue. These above indicate that BRM was doomed from the start long before the GPS issue failed as no effective ‘ALL round All Available means could be achieved’ and its long standing. To improve safety, AMSA will need to mandate independent check pilots, separate from pilot companies, across all Australian ports. This would address inconsistent application and enhance reliability and continuous improvement, as well as the current IMO rules above. #AMSA #AMPI #IMPA #ATSB
Our Great Barrier Reef is one of the most biodiverse and important ecosystems on the planet. The more than 10,000 ships that transit it annually are a lifeblood for the Australian economy. Highlighting where any of the multiple layers of defences to keep it safe have not been as effective as designed, and pointing to where improvements can be made, is an important part of the ATSB's role. Today we release our final report from an investigation into a serious incident where a bulk carrier came within 200 m of grounding in the Great Barrier Reef after a GPS unit began providing false information to the pilot and crew on board. https://lnkd.in/gyFhTiX2
