Hispanic Heritage Month, which spans from September 15 to October 15, is a time dedicated to acknowledging the accomplishments and contributions of inspirational champions within the Hispanic American community who have motivated others to strive for success. This observance originated in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week during President Lyndon Johnson's administration and was later expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to encompass a full 30-day period. It officially became a law on August 17, 1988. National Hispanic Heritage Month traditionally shines a spotlight on the diverse cultures and significant contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans, celebrating a heritage deeply rooted in the histories of all Latin American countries. The term "Hispanic" typically denotes individuals from Spanish-speaking countries or those with ancestral ties to such regions. Conversely, "Latino," "Latina," "Latine," or "Latinx" generally describes individuals from Latin American countries or those with roots in those nations. The choice of which term to use is often a matter of personal preference. Due to the close connections between Latino and Hispanic American identities in the United States, National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations frequently encompass the recognition and inclusion of Latino Americans as well.

From September 15th to October 15th, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) in the United States. This month-long celebration is an opportunity to embrace our history, culture and traditions, as well as, highlight the enormous contributions of Hispanics to the fabric of the United States. This month, let’s celebrate our heritage and reflect about the enduring connections between the U.S. and our Latin American nations. This HHM should be a tribute to the past, a celebration of the present, and an inspiration for the future! Beyond the festivities, HHM is a reminder of the unity we feel as Latinos despite our own diversity. Hispanics are like a colorful tapestry of sorts: from the vibrant sounds of our musical rhythms to the rich flavors of our delicious cuisines. We know that there is an unexplainable force that unites us and that we can always count on each other! Why is Hispanic Heritage Month celebrated? Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) in the United States has its origins as a week-long celebration established by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968 to recognize Hispanic and Latino American contributions. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded it to a month, from September 15th to October 15th, to coincide with the independence days of several Latin American countries. HHM has since gained official recognition and evolved into a nationwide celebration.

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period. During National Hispanic Heritage Month, the U.S. celebrates the countless contributions of more than 60 million Hispanic Americans, Latinos, Latinas, Latinx, and Latine-identifying people to our culture and society. They are the largest minority group in the United States today, and generations of them consistently helped make our country strong and prosperous. The Hispanic Americans/ Latino/a/x/e community has left an indelible mark on our government, culture, and economy.

As we continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, let's honor the trailblazers, heroes, and leaders who have left an indelible mark on our nation. These statistics remind us that Hispanic Americans have not only enriched our culture, history, and achievements but have also played a vital role in safeguarding our nation's freedom.

Hispanic Heritage Month is unique in that it crosses over two months. This time period was chosen because September 15 is the anniversary of independence for the Latin American countries El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Honduras. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and 18, respectively. Belize celebrates its independence day on September 21. The observation began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon B. Johnson, and was expanded in 1988 to a 30-day period by President Ronald Reagan. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988. Latinx history is American history.
