6kW vertical turbine trial in Australia to boost sustainability, reduce costs ◾Acutting-edge vertical axis turbine (VAWT) will undergo trials near Adelaide through a partnership between Australia’s Flinders University and start-up VAWT-X Energy. ◾The team has developed and tested a 6kW prototype set for installation on the Fleurieu Peninsula in the coming weeks. ◾The innovative design aims to enhance sustainability and reduce energy costs for residential, agricultural, and light industrial applications near urban areas, as well as for large offshore wind farms. ◾According to the team, the standalone vertical turbine, engineered for quiet operation and versatility, is proving to be as efficient as, or potentially more efficient than, traditional horizontal models. ◾In April 2024, a new EPFL research claimed to boost the efficiency of VAWTs by 200 percent and cut damaging vibrations by 77 percent. Achieving this requires significant advancements in turbine design and efficiency. Wind turbines, categorized by size and location, range from small-scale models for urban and residential use to large-scale onshore and offshore installations. ◾The business is dominated by horizontal-axis turbines (HAWTs), which are highly efficient but have drawbacks such as structural stress and environmental effects. Despite being underutilized, VAWTs perform exceptionally well in urban and variable wind environments. ◾Savonius VAWTs are straightforward but less effective; they use half-cylinder shapes or cups to capture wind energy. Darrieus VAWTs, on the other hand, have more efficiency but have major structural difficulties because of their long, curved blades that are joined at both ends of the rotor shaft. ◾High power density for wind farms, improved stability for offshore applications, flexibility to wind-varying metropolitan areas, and quieter, more economical operation are just a few advantages they offer. ◾The low-maintenance, helical vertical-axis turbine features a two-bladed rotor connected to a shaft, brake, and generator. “The design of these new VAWT-X Energy turbines solves some of the traditional barriers for Darrieus designs,” said Gary Andrews, VAWT-X Energy founder, in a statement. ◾“We believe our VAWTs are not only more efficient but also more accessible for applications like off-grid power and sustainable energy solutions for small businesses and farms,” he added. Thermal Energy Networks (TENs) utilizing Geothermal by Subterra Renewables and Wastewater Energy Transfer (WET) by SHARC Energy enable developments to avoid fossil fuels for heating purposes, and are capable of delivering air conditioning at very low energy intensity, thereby creating an energy efficient way of servicing multiple different buildings of various sizes and types in a district, campus, or neighbourhood setting. Geothermal fields are suitable “anchors” for a larger district energy system (also known as a thermal energy network or TENs) that could utilize several thermal energy sources, such as geothermal and WET (waste-energy transfer technology), to supplement and deliver green, renewable, heating and cooling to neighbouring businesses and households. Ambient loops can be installed throughout several neighbourhoods and blocks. Each business and residence would then have the opportunity to install a heat pump to pull thermal energy from and reject thermal energy to this interconnected ambient loop. This network creates the opportunity to implement additional thermal resources that will effectively “feed” the ambient loop, such as additional geothermal bore fields, Wastewater Energy Transfer technology connected to sewage lines to recover effluent heat, and possibly a thermal rejection site if there is a body of water nearby. An ideal structure of a TEN is where a municipality or the state would owns the ambient loop (the distribution system), as this is inherently a monopoly and would need to be regulated. The thermal resources, such as the geothermal system, additional geo bore fields, thermal rejection systems, and Wastewater Energy Transfer technology, can be privately owned or owned and operated under a Public-Private Partnership model (PPP).
