As we mark World Environment Day 2024, let’s reflect on the theme of "Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience" and associate it with Nepalese context.
In Nepal, let's consider three pressing environmental issues that stand out:
1) AIR & WATER POLLUTION: The air we breathe and the water we drink are fundamental to our health. Yet, pollution threatens these vital resources daily.
2) DEFORESTATION & BIODIVERSITY LOSS: Our forests in addition to playing crucial role as carbon sinks in mitigating climate change, are also home to diverse species. Their loss impacts not just wildlife, but also our agricultural and tourism sectors.
3) CLIMATE-INDUCED DISASTERS: Increasingly severe floods and landslides disrupt lives and livelihoods, as well cause damages to projects and infrastructures.
To turn these challenges into opportunities for action, we must focus on:
a) A Proactive and Effective Regulatory Implementation and Monitoring: It’s imperative that the government plays a pivotal role by being the driving force for proactive and effective policy implementation.
b) Private Sector Commitments: Businesses must weigh the long-term benefits of sustainability against short-term costs. Committing to eco-friendly practices and green investments can drive innovation and open up new markets, ultimately benefiting both the environment and the bottom line.
c) Public Awareness and Accountability: Every citizen has a role to play. By raising awareness and holding ourselves accountable, we can drive collective action and demand more from our leaders and businesses.
Walking the Talk: It’s time for all stakeholders to move beyond declarations and aspirations. We must demonstrate our commitment through actions that yield visible, positive impacts on our environment and society.
At NMB Bank, we understand the importance of these actions. We’re committed to leading by example, integrating ESG principles into our operations and supporting initiatives that yield measurable outcomes.
This World Environment Day, let’s pledge to make a difference that is visible and beneficial to all. Let’s work together for a greener, more resilient Nepal.
