Do you recognise this stunning island located in the EU? 👇  A little hint: It’s part of an archipelago with five main islands in the Mediterranean.    A natural wonder that we need to preserve.    Roughly 8 million tonnes of plastics go yearly into the sea, a large amount of which is fishing gear. Beneath the waves lies a world teeming with life, where coral reefs flourish in vibrant color and intricate patterns. But this breathtaking beauty is under threat, not just from the warming seas but from the suffocating grip of plastic pollution. 🌊 Each piece of plastic that enters our oceans could end up choking these fragile ecosystems, disrupting marine life, and accelerating the bleaching events driven by global warming. 🪸 According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), microplastics have been shown to stunt coral growth and prevent them from catching actual prey, either by making the coral feel "full" or by decreasing the amount of energy they have that's needed to catch their food.  As these scientists continue to study and gather research, it's becoming more clear that no marine creature is safe from plastic.  Let's give our reefs a fighting chance. 🌍Today is World Environment Day! Established by the UN in 1972, it is celebrated every June 5th to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our planet. This date marks the beginning of the Stockholm Conference, crucial for the creation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Over the years, we have made significant progress: the 2015 Paris Agreement aims to limit global warming to 1.5°C.🌡️ However, the challenges remain immense. In 2022, global CO2 emissions reached a record high of 36.8 billion tonnes.🚨 The theme for 2024 is "Solutions to Plastic Pollution".🧴 Each year, about 8 million tonnes of plastic end up in our oceans, endangering marine life and our health. It's time to take concrete action: recycle, reduce single-use plastics, and support sustainable policies. Each of us can make a difference. 𝟎𝟓𝐭𝐡 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 - 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐃𝐚𝐲 🌎🌿 On this day we reflect particularly on our impact on the environment. The UN has stated that to keep global warming below 1.5°C this century, annual greenhouse gas emissions must be halved by 2030. Furthermore, without action, exposure to air pollution beyond safety guidelines will increase by 50% within a decade, and plastic waste ending up in aquatic ecosystems will nearly triple by 2040. From climate change and plastic pollution, to mining and overfishing, the threats facing our oceans are getting more urgent every day. The oceans produce half of our oxygen, and food for a billion people. And because they soak up huge amounts of carbon dioxide, they’re also one of our best defences against climate change. The good news is that there’s a new treaty in the works that could pave the way for new ocean sanctuaries all over the world. Scientists have drawn up a rescue plan for our oceans. The plan is bold, and brilliantly simple: we cover the planet in ocean sanctuaries, putting a third of the oceans off-limits to fishing, mining and other destructive industries. Here’s the problem: at the moment, there’s no way to create new sanctuaries outside countries’ national waters. We can’t protect these huge areas of the ocean without an international agreement on how this protection would work. Governments have started work on a United Nations Ocean Treaty, and if they get it right it’ll give us the tools we need to make these sanctuaries happen. The oceans need your support.
