FURTHER EXPANSION POSSIBLE // “We are well established as the North East’s largest independent cleaning and facilities management firm and have a clear strategy in place that will take us to the next level by the end of next year.” Independent contract cleaning and facilities management firm Maxim Facilities Management Ltd, which is based in Sunderland, is aiming to create around 250 new jobs over the next 18 months. Having taken on more than 250 staff over the past 12 months - taking its total workforce up to 1500 people - the firm is confident of creating the same number of new jobs by the end of the next year, with half of them being in the North East. Following a period of steady growth, Maxim FM’s annual turnover passed £15 million for the first time, with the firm on track to achieve its goal of becoming a £20 million turnover company by the end of 2025. With branch offices in Leeds, Swindon and North Lanarkshire, as well as a growing list of clients, the firm has a clear strategy for further expansion. To celebrate World Facilities Management Day, we caught up with Momentum Maintain’s Facilities Management Director, Matthew Pilling, to get an insight into how he got into the industry and his advice for those seeking out a career in FM:   How did you get into Facilities Management?   I joined the industry straight out of university, on a graduate scheme at Carillion. After doing a module at university on Facilities Management I decided it was the career for me. In my experience, it is quite rare for someone to go into the industry straight away, with most coming from a security background.   What is your favourite part of working within FM?   Definitely the variety. I can go from working on a £100k refurbishment project in Sheffield, straight to solving fire alarm issues on Church Street in Liverpool, and then to meeting a new client, so it is never the same every day. Ultimately, we are here to serve the clients’ needs so the work changes daily and constant variety, which is what I like!   Can you share some advice for those looking to start a career in the sector?   When I was in my graduate role at Carillion, someone said to me “you’ve got all the intelligence to be able to do the job, but no experience. You can learn everything you can through a textbook, but you need experience to learn and have the confidence to put that into place.” – and this really stuck with me. Embrace the industry, understand systems from the ground up, go out and live it, and get that invaluable first-hand experience.    It is important not to forget that we are a service industry. The cleaner is vitally important, and on par with the director leading the business, so everyone should be treated equally and with the same respect.    Finally, don’t be scared to break the mould or do things differently.
