Food Empowerment Project has released a new page all about octopuses 🐙 We bring you a host of information about these incredible and fascinating creatures. Sadly, the rise of octopus farming is impacting their lives. Learn more about this horrible and inhumane practice, and why it’s bad for the environment, human health, and why these animals shouldn’t be tortured and killed for human consumption ➡️ https://buff.ly/3Mp22r6 [ID: Reddish octopus in the wild floating in the ocean with text that reads,“the Spanish “seafood” company Nueva Pescanova announced plans to establish the world’s first commercial octopus farm in the port of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The farm has the potential to ship some 3,000 tons of frozen octopuses a year. That’s about 1 million animals.”]

Today is World Bee Day, a day to recognise the essential role bees play in food systems, biodiversity and ecosystem health. This year's World Bee Day Australia theme is "Celebrating bees and their vital role in global food systems." Bees and other pollinators play a major role in food production. In Australia, at least 53 crops rely to some extent on bees. These include almonds, avocados, apples, berries, stone fruit, carrots, oilseeds such as canola, and legumes like clover and lucerne that feed farm livestock. You can take simple steps to protect bees and other pollinators in your garden by planting pollinator-friendly plants, avoiding chemicals and creating habitat for ground nesting and cavity nesting bees. #worldbeeday #bees #weneedbees #worldbeeday

Aquaculture addresses the increasing demand for seafood while relieving pressure on wild fish stocks, and promoting sustainability in food production. Fish, rich in omega-3 fatty acids and essential nutrients, play a vital role in supporting heart health, cognitive function, and overall well-being, emphasizing the importance of aquaculture in maintaining a nutritious diet. Integrating aquaculture into global food systems not only enhances food security but also contributes to public health and environmental conservation efforts. Want to learn more? 🐟🌊 Fish deserve compassion! 🌊🐟 In an article by Florianne Koechlin in the online newspaper Infosperber, the agonizing reality for fish is discussed and how fair-fish is working to change this. This text is part of Florianne Köchlin's new book "Verwoben und verflochten". 🎣 Fish feel pain: It has been scientifically proven that fish feel pain. Nevertheless, they are often kept and caught in cruel conditions. 💔 Cruel practices: In industrial fishing, fish usually suffer from injuries, pressure fluctuations and slowly suffocate on deck. 🌍 Our mission at fair-fish: Founded by Billo Heinzpeter Studer, fair-fish is committed to species-appropriate farming and fishing methods. We create behavioral profiles for fish to better understand their needs and document the conditions in aquacultures. Our vision: We want to change people's perception and behavior towards fish. We rely on science and communication. 🐠 Transparency in global fish farming: Many labels do not take sufficient account of fish welfare. fair-fish developed strict criteria for ethical fish farming in collaboration with Friend of the Sea. 🌟 Practical tips: Avoid consuming farmed predatory fish such as salmon and pikeperch, as they can hardly be kept in a species-appropriate way. Tilapia is a better choice, as they can live in aquacultures under suitable conditions. Let's work together to raise awareness for the welfare of fish and advocate for better treatment of these creatures! 👉 Find out more at: https://lnkd.in/dugkXGkA 📷: Chris_and_Ralph - Pixabay.com #fairfish #sustainablefisheries #responsibleaquaculture #fishcare #waterbiodiversity #fishprotection #sustainablefisheries #aquaticanimalwelfare #fishfarming #riverprotection #fishhabitat #aquaculture

Farming octopuses would be both cruel and unsustainable. Yet, Spanish seafood company Nueva Pescanova plans to open the world’s first octopus farm in Gran Canaria, Spain. If the octopus farm is approved, it will be a disaster for octopuses - extremely intelligent and solitary in nature - and for the environment and public health. Compassion in World Farming and Eurogroup for Animals's joint report shows that this octopus farm comes with significant environmental risks, requiring an unsustainable use of natural resources, including water, energy as well as wild fish for feed. Join us and tell Nueva Pescanova to halt its reckless plans NOW. #Lab #grown #seafood Kochi-headquartered ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has entered into a collaborative research agreement with a private-sector start-up offering cultivated meat technology solutions to grow fish meat in the laboratory 📍What is lab growm fish It is merely a type of lab-grown — or cultivated/ cultured — meat. Seafood without the sea is ‘grown’ in the same way as other cultivated meats are grown — without the need to raise and kill an animal. Cultivated fish meat is produced by isolating specific cells from fish and growing them in a laboratory setting using media that is free of animal components. The final product is expected to replicate the flavour, texture, and nutritional qualities of ‘real’ fish meat. Prashant Srivastava #Agriculture and #Allied #Sector

PROUDLY FARM RAISED 👩🌾 There’s a lot of talk (and misinformation) when it comes to aquaculture and farm-raised bivalves. ❌ A few of our favorite facts: 🎉 We grow our clams and oysters in the same ocean-flushed waters as their wild counterparts, so they have the same incredible flavor. 🌊 We operate put-and-take fisheries, so we only harvest what we plant. This doesn’t deplete wild shellfish populations and is incredibly sustainable. 🦪 Bivalves are filter feeders: they improve water quality and contribute to increased species diversity – win win! ✔ We control our process from spawning to sale, which means we can offer products that strictly adhere to our quality standards. We have the final say in every part of the bivalves from birth, to rearing and husbandry, to market. ⭐ All this means superior clams and oysters with sustainability in mind.

#Repost @seashepherd with @use.repost ・・・ ✋ Saving the ocean can start on your plate❗️ 🍽 Our crews thrive on a nutritious and delicious, #plantbased diet thanks to our amazing cooks. And guess what? You can too! If you seriously care about the ocean, this is one of the steps you can take for the benefit of the planet. But how does it make a difference? (we hear you ask) Let us explain! ⬇️ The animal agriculture industry has historically been linked to many massive ocean dead zones around the world, killing the #ocean with the run-off pollution from large-scale factory farming. Wild fish are being used to feed domesticated farm animals, making the meat industry the biggest consumer of ocean wildlife on the planet. 🌏 Fish farming, seen by some as a solution to overfishing, just leads to even more overfishing as the farmed fish have to eat too. And gas pollution, especially from cattle farms, is driving up ocean acidity, rendering shelled marine animals defenseless and corals bleached and dead. In short, animal agriculture is killing the ocean.🌊 Do you have vegan cooking experience and want a new challenge while serving the planet, the ocean, and its marine wildlife❓ This is the opportunity for you❗️ 👉 Apply today via the link in our bio 🎥 Alexandre Desplat / Sea Shepherd #seashepherd #veganfortheocean #marineconservation

Exciting news! Our research at the Centre for Aquaculture Progress has been featured in a recent article on The Fish Site. 🐟 Key findings: • 83% of consumers prefer humane slaughtering practices for sea bream and sea bass • 80% are willing to pay €0.05 extra per 200g for fish treated with electro-anesthesia prior to harvest • Strong support across France, Italy, Greece, and Spain This study highlights the growing consumer demand for reduced fish stress in aquaculture. As an industry, it's crucial we work together to meet these preferences. We offer pro bono consultation services to producers interested in implementing pre-slaughter electro-anesthesia. Don't hesitate to reach out to learn more about how we can support your transition to more modern harvesting practices. #Aquaculture #SeaBream #SeaBass #ElectricalStunning #ElectroAnesthesia
