John Atasie, MBA of Apache Corporation, Kelly Munson of DistributionNow, Dave Warnick of ChasmBridge and Billy Stein of Oceaneering joined Energy Workforce President Molly Determan at Energy Conference Network's Energy Supply Chain Conference for a panel discussing challenges facing the industry in talent attraction and retention. The panel discussed how to create a holistic workforce while managing risk and the collaboration between HR and procurement to acquire talent in a more unified way. Are you asking these two questions? Keen to beat the competition in the war for talent? I spoke with the HR Director of a large renewable energy provider last week. They focus on utility-scale projects. She said they are experiencing quite a few dropouts and withdrawals of candidates. This is happening mid-way through their search for a Country Business Development Manager. I asked her two key questions. 1. What must this person accomplish during the first year to be a top 1/3rd performer in your business? 2. Why would a top performer want this job if it wasn’t for the money? Why am I telling you this? She couldn’t answer. Well, she answered, but she gave me the usual rubbish: “We are a global business”. “We have international projects”. “We are a $ 10 million turnover business”. So what? She agreed to try and change the focus. Define success and motivate beyond money. See what happens.
