#Indigenousknowledge plays a vital role in #sustainabledevelopment by offering a heritage of practices and wisdom that have allowed communities to live in harmony with their natural environments for generations. This encompasses knowledge and understanding of climate systems, local ecosystems, climate-resilient agricultural practices, and biodiversity conservation. This holistic understanding is crucial in integrating traditional ecological knowledge into contemporary adaptation practices to enhance climate resilience and sustainability. #Youth are the custodians of indigenous knowledge for future generations. They serve as the bridge between traditional knowledge and contemporary innovations in science. By actively involving youth in the preservation and application of traditional knowledge, communities can ensure that these practices are not lost, but rather integrated with modern practices. It is therefore of utmost importance to educate and empower youth to appreciate and apply indigenous knowledge and to foster the sense of identity, responsibility, and pride. This is vital to promote traditional knowledge in solving current and future sustainability challenges and achieve #sustainabledevelopment. Tell a youth today! #GIYSCC2024

Today (09/08/2023) is International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. This was established in 1994 by the General Assembly of the United Nations. It aims to raise awareness about and to protect the human rights of indigenous communities across the world. Indigenous people often suffer the worst effects of social problems, a direct consequence of their marginalisation and displacement during the process of colonisation. Indigenous people are three times more likely to find themselves in extreme poverty and 47% of indigenous people in employment possess no formal education. The passing down, from generation to generation, of traditional knowledge is often an important characteristic of indigenous cultures. In many cases, this process has facilitated not only the survival of indigenous communities, but it has also fostered an awareness of and a harmonious relationship with their immediate environment. Traditional knowledge incorporates techniques including plant medicine, shelter construction, and hunting skills. Much of this knowledge is learned through everyday activities. More specialised knowledge is usually held by “gatekeepers” who have developed expertise and who are therefore entrusted to develop and maintain cultural coherence and stability. For many matriarchal indigenous tribes, such as the Minangkabau of Indonesia or the Khasi of India, women perform crucial roles as “gatekeepers” of traditional knowledge. Climate change is one of the biggest threats to traditional knowledge. For example, temperature changes in the Andes has disrupted crop systems and hunting methods, causing food insecurity and energy problems. Global warming has resulted in the increasing destruction of indigenous people’s ancestral environments. At the same time, there has been a renewed interest in and drive to highlight and learn from the typically sustainable relationships that indigenous people have had with their environments for thousands of years. Understanding and prioritising traditional knowledge could prove key to preventing the worst effects of climate change. The theme of this year’s International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is “Indigenous youth as agents of change for self-determination”. The aim is to highlight the work being done by young indigenous people to tackle some of the biggest challenges facing the world today, not least climate change. Young people from indigenous communities are taking a leading role in protecting the planet and fighting for justice for their people, thus helping to ensure the protection and survival of their culture and traditional knowledge. My essay on “Accelerating the SDGs through Investments in Marine Natural Capital” has been published as part of the official T20 compendium for India’s G20 presidency. The essay explores how investing in each of four marine ecosystems could accelerate the SDGs, help preserve biodiversity and harness the blue economy’s full potential: 🌊 Coral reefs 🌊 Mangrove forests 🌊 Seagrass meadows 🌊 Seaweed The compendium ”Think20 India 2023: Critical, Constructive, Conclusive” brings diverse perspectives from G20 countries. Its 15 essays explore the core themes of India’s presidency, highlighting the challenges and framing pathways to sustainable solutions. It was curated and edited by Harsh V. Pant and Shairee Malhotra and was released at the T20 final summit in Mysuru, India, on August 2nd. Exciting News! Thrilled to announce that my project has been selected for the London Student Sustainability Conference 2024! The sea is gone, but people stay.   Climate change, along with existing gender inequality in Karakalpakstan, has a significant influence on the health, safety, and security of women and girls in the Aral Sea area of Karakalpakstan. Women are facing climate change consequences harsher than men.   Unfortunately, very little is currently known about the impacts of climate change on gender inequality in the region. If no scientific investigation is done and appropriate preventative and adaptive measures are implemented, disputes over access to water are likely to arise between communities and nations throughout Central Asia.   UN Secretary-General António Guterres refers to it as "probably the biggest ecological catastrophe of our time".   My study brings important findings for policy-makers and researchers, encouraging them to focus on exploring new data, and gender-responsive programmes in the Aral Sea region. Finance social science research: collaborating with international organisations, funders, governments, think tanks, private research institutions, and universities might direct more funding and grants towards investigating the social implications of climate change in Central Asia. With the text of the Just Transition Work Program negotiated & redrafted overnight, it’s essential to understand how developments at #COP28 can impact #JustTransitions on the local level. 🌍 “Connecting international cooperation to the local realities of the just transition,” an event hosted by the Republic of Colombia, Climate Strategies, and DIW Berlin this morning at #COP28, aimed to do just that. This side event brought together policymakers 🏛, community leaders👤, and research experts ✍ to discuss the role that Just Transitions can play in catalysing ambition and implementation. Speakers emphasised perspectives from Global South, indigenous communities, women, and youth. 💬 Opening presentations from Susana Muhamad, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development of Colombia; Prof Jim Skea, Chair of the IPCC; and Dr heiner von luepke of DIW Berlin - German Institute for Economic Research, provided essential context on what #JustTransitions are, how they can guide national policy, and how international finance can play a role in their mobilisaiton. Speakers and panellists provided crucial insight into what #JustTransitions mean at the local level 🏙. Case studies drawn from South Africa, Ghana, Lebanon, India, the U.S., indigenous communities, and more highlighted one clear message: there is no one-size-fits-all approach to Just Transitions. The book chapter is finally out!! Super excited to share that my #G20 book chapter, ‘A Framework for Quantifying Climate Co-Benefits of Development Programmes’, co-authored with Tashina Madappa and Sahil Mathew, has been published in the book ‘Bridging the Ingenuity Gap: Ideas for a Vibrant G20’. This book, edited by India’s G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant and ORF President Samir Saran, is a special edition collection featuring the #top 27 T20 policy briefs from over 320 published during India’s G20 presidency in 2023. Our policy brief was selected for inclusion, and we were invited to expand it into a full chapter. In our chapter, we present a framework for quantifying the climate co-benefits of natural resource management-based development programmes as part of broader endeavors to meet climate targets. Today at COP28, Estonian Centre for International Development (ESTDEV) offered a platform to Ms. Anna Celine Kraus, a dynamic youth delegate, who led a candid and insightful discussion on investing in youth-led green technology businesses. She engaged her guests with incisive questions, eliciting fresh and bold statements. H.E Mrs. Kersti Kaljulaid emphasized the importance of education in fostering innovation, stating, "If it would be up to me, I would invest all the public funds currently invested into businesses into education. The skills needed for harnessing emerging technologies to combat climate change are embedded in maths.” Mr. Joseph Murabula highlighted the unique potential of Africa’s youth in creating solutions for twin transitions, applicable both within Africa and globally. He pointed out the crucial role of KCIC in supporting these budding enterprises in East Africa towards self-sustainability. Mr. Andrus Treier shifted the focus to how young investors are revolutionizing investment models and practices with their bold, thoughtful choices. The session underscored the need for development cooperation, particularly in emerging countries where resources are limited and innovation may not be a governmental priority. ESTDEV, in collaboration with African, Estonian, and European partners from various sectors, is actively working on initiatives that support twin transitions, demonstrating a commitment to empowering innovation and sustainable development.
