I produce and co-host an education research podcast, and we release new episodes on the 12th of every month. Guest host Chris Carter joins to talk civic discourse & politics in the classroom. As we get ready for an election in the United States, we look at a framework for political discussion in the K-12 classroom. This model for deliberative values offers a way to cultivate appropriate conversations about civic topics with students. Later, we look at media literacy as an essential component of preparing students to be both effective students and responsible citizens. I personally loved the framework they shared for teaching media literacy: 1) Safe Online Use 2) Effective Information Analysis 3) Engage Your Own Civic Voice We must help students with each step - in order - to develop their media literacy!

Picture a landscape where children are not bound by zip codes or economic circumstances, but instead, have access to schools that nurture their talents and aspirations. When parents have the freedom to explore a spectrum of educational options—from traditional public schools to charter schools, private institutions, and homeschooling—they become active participants in their child's educational journey, fostering a sense of ownership and investment in their academic success. Critics may argue that expanding school choice undermines the stability and viability of traditional public schools. However, Governor Doug Ducey's vision transcends the false dichotomy of choice versus public education. Rather than viewing choice as a threat, it should be regarded as a catalyst for positive transformation within our educational systems. There's a fundamental problem in education that (almost) no one talks about: kids and younger adults often don't know basic things about the world that we assume they know. That interferes with their ability to learn and to develop to their full potential. People may avoid talking about the problem because it sounds like we're blaming the kids.
