Finding the value in a challenging site Following our win at the British Homes Awards 2023, Olly Bray - director at OB Architecture - shares his thoughts on what such an important award means for our practice: ‘’It is such an honour to be recognised by the judges of the British Homes Awards for our Strawberry Close development in Tunbridge Wells. Projects like this on challenging sites require so much energy and commitment to see them through. The vision can so easily be compromised along the way, so to see this one carried through with such skill and integrity is huge credit to everyone involved. Yesterday, Malcolm Birks, Head of Design and Sally Ormiston, Head of Consulting attended the Building Garden Communities Conference at RIBA. They reflected on a fascinating session on the evolution of modern methods of construction (MMC) for homes and public buildings. The session debated on why the market has of yet failed to deliver ‘better homes cheaper’ at the scale needed to meet the potential that MMC has to offer in environmental sustainability terms. Standardisation seems to be key and the panel offered a perspective that this doesn’t mean low quality and that architectural design can still ensure that homes and buildings built using these methods can be beautiful and of their place; both critical when thinking about how MMC might be used in the rural context. #MMC #RIBA #RuralArchitecture #ArchitecturalDesign

Following last week’s #heritagetreasures post, we are sharing a micro case study on one of our smaller, but just as important heritage projects; Foley House in Great Malvern. The project was managed by Associate Director of Architecture, Sandy Fishpool. Objective: To return the Grade II listed Foley House to residential use through a sensitive conversion to apartments, working to a tight budget whilst ensuring a restoration that would meet planning requirements. It was discovered that the building was in a dilapidated state which required prompt action and the project was expanded to include major repair works. Approach: We took an interdisciplinary approach, involving planning, listed building consents, design and onsite project management. The local community asked for the retention of the historical plaque on the building façade and we worked hard to ensure this and other important heritage features were retained. Outcome: Success. Planning permission and listed building consent were achieved and the building’s new life as residential apartments began in 2023 when the new occupants of this heritage building moved in. #Heritage #CaseStudy #ResidentialDevelopment #ListedBuilding #PlanningPermission #RuralDevelopment #WeAreRural #ADifferentView
