As the week draws to a close, I reflect on the profound encounters with my last two patients, both grappling with mental health challenges amidst difficult life circumstances. These interactions serve as a poignant reminder of the multifaceted role healthcare professionals (HCPs) play in patient care, extending far beyond the realms of medication and diagnostics. My first patient, caught in a cycle of couch surfing and occasional homelessness, reached out for help, feeling disconnected and ostracized from society. Our half-hour consultation was not just a clinical evaluation but a heartfelt dialogue about his struggles and aspirations. He expressed a desire to address his mental health and secure stable housing—a request that led me to provide a supporting statement on his behalf. It was a small but significant way to assist in his journey toward stability and well-being. The second patient sought a space to voice her distress over family issues and housing insecurity. Tearful during the consultation, she found solace in simply being heard. Recognizing her need for ongoing support, I referred her to our mental health nurse for further care. These encounters underscore a crucial aspect of healthcare: the power of listening and offering a comforting presence. Sometimes, the most therapeutic intervention is providing an empathetic ear and understanding heart. As HCPs, our capacity to impact lives stretches beyond traditional treatment pathways—it's about connecting, empathizing, and supporting individuals through their most vulnerable moments. Finally the feedback from both patients has profoundly affirmed the value of my work. They both expressed a desire for me to be involved in their future clinical appointments, a testament to the trust and comfort we built in just one meeting. This recognition not only humbles me but also fuels my commitment to healthcare. It's a powerful reminder of the impact we can have, not just through our clinical expertise, but through our humanity and the relationships we build. Knowing that I've made a significant difference in their journey towards healing and stability is incredibly rewarding, reinforcing my belief in the importance of compassionate care #MentalHealthAwareness #PatientCare #Pharmacist

Founder and CEO at Cass | Mental Health Advocate | Digital Transformation through AI | Keynote Speaker
The industry has rethought the way we deliver mental health support. Those rethinking the journey to get there are shaping the landscape for the future. Prior to launching Cass, I was peering through the lens of a patient, attempting to navigate our overly complex healthcare system. My experience created a desire to help others walking the same path, so I became a Peer Support Counselor. Through efforts to assist my peers, I noticed that most face too many barriers with too few resources to make it through the therapy journey. With the help of our telehealth partners, Cass is working to close those gaps for our communities’ most vulnerable populations by: -Providing a simple way to complete forms and screenings. -Boosting the contact rate for new patient enrollment coordinators. -Streamlining scheduling and registration. -24/7 support to patients leading up to treatment. -Connecting patients to valuable support services. What other gaps do you see leading to patient drop-off? What stage of the funnel is being impacted the most?

✨(1) Let us continue to build capacity in complex care. Patients with combined complex needs (physical, mental and social conditions) are on the rise. These patients frequent emergency rooms, hospitals and clinics hoping for an answer to their complex symptoms and conditions only to be disappointed, leading to poor care, poor health and poor care experience felt by their clinicians too. Excited to dive into the world of peer mental health specialists and how this role helps a segment of patients who have complex needs. I often get asked questions given our team 10+ years of successful experience integrating Peers into the “licensed” care team, we've chosen to call them peer community health workers and they have been vitals to the success of our small but mighty Center for Integrated Care team. Over the next months, I'll be microblogging to shed light on this vital role. Stay tuned as I explore questions like: - What do peers exactly do? - What are the key characteristics? - How is it different from professional and licensed roles? - Who benefits most from peer interventions? - Is this intervention cost-effective? - Is the role certified and reimbursable? - How to seamlessly integrate this role into the professional care team? - What does success look like? What other questions do you have about peer mental health specialists? #mentalhealth #peersupport #healthcare #communityhealthworkers #integratedcare #wholepersoncare #specialneeds #specialneedsplan #complexcare #complexneeds #microbloggingforgood #MediCal #peermentalhealthspecialist

I hear a lot of non-behavioral health healthcare workers say, “I am not a “psych” provider/nurse”, or “that’s not our problem”. Where do these incorrect and dehumanizing statements stem from? Those we serve are negatively impacted by these harmful misconceptions. Dr. Brian Ahmedani and team’s research will tell you the percentage of people who visit a non-behavioral health hospital/provider in the previous 7/30/60/90/180/365 days prior to dying by suicide (https://lnkd.in/gB2BFAbK). As we enter into May Mental Health Awareness Month, I’d like to highlight the American Hospital Association’s push for harmonizing physical and emotional health in all general hospital/non-behavioral health settings. I would also like to highlight the American Nurses Association’s Scope and Standards of Practice which speaks to nursing as a holistic practice that encompasses the assessment and prioritization of psychosocial, emotional, and spiritual/transpersonal needs, amongst others. There is no health without mental health.
